Sublime sunsets and the ultimate wind-down at Little Sur

Sublime sunsets and the ultimate wind-down at Little Sur

Work over, I was getting excited driving down the winding, coastal roads, getting closer and closer to the sea. I pulled up, stepped out the car and was blown away at just how beautiful Little Sur was, nestled away in the cliffs with the wide expanse of sea in front of me.

Stepping through the door, it was just lovely to be greeted to a fresh hamper full of Cornish, organic goodies and a warm welcome note. The first thing I had to do was open the bi-folding doors leading to the spectacular, decked balcony. Wow, I had never seen such a mesmerising view, completely uninterrupted and just stunning. I found myself sitting and staring for almost an hour!

My partner arrived after his long day at work and was equally overwhelmed at our little gem for the weekend. Later that evening we decided to make the most of the wonderful weather and watch the sun go down. We cooked some fresh pizzas, opened a bottle of chilled rosé wine and sat comfortably on the terrace taking in our beautiful surroundings.

We stayed there until dark and gazed at the moon and stars, wrapped up in our cosy blankets.. how romantic! After a few hours, we hesitantly decided to head inside and our bare feet were automatically graced with a toasty, heated floor; bliss!

The next morning, I opened our bedroom patio doors facing the rear garden and the sunshine beamed through the windows. It was so peaceful, all we could hear were birds tweeting and the sheep in the field next door. We sat in our four-poster bed and enjoyed a freshly brewed coffee before heading out to the terrace to tuck in to our scrummy breakfast hamper.

Conveniently located opposite Little Sur are some steps leading down to the beach. We packed the essentials and took a leisurely stroll down to the water. We set up in a quiet, sheltered spot at the far end and were pleasantly surprised that it was just us in sight! It was so warm, we planned to dip our toes in the glistening, clear water, but surprised at how nice it was, we had a full swim; what a treat!

After a couple of hours, we decided to take a short drive to Mount Edgcumbe. We parked quite easily and found a table in the sunshine at the Edgcumbe Arms overlooking Drakes Island. We enjoyed a light bite – just sandwiches as we were still quite full from breakfast. Afterwards we walked through Mount Edgecumbe country park which is beautifully presented with acres of impressive gardens and a gorgeous view overlooking Royal William Yard. Dinner that evening was on the terrace again, this time a quickly prepared Chicken Caesar Salad and an ice-cold gin and tonic; a perfect way to end the hot summers day.

The Carew Arms in Antony had been recommended to us, so we decided to head out for a late traditional Sunday roast (late due to watching England play in the World Cup!). We booked a table as we had heard it was popular amongst the locals. The pub is tastefully decorated and as we stepped in we were met with smiles all round and a cute beagle dog which ran eagerly towards us. We asked if we could sit in the sunny beer garden and Watson (the beagle) lead the way. We chose a table and Watson perched and joined us. Lunch was roast beef and we could see why this place came recommended, it was utterly delicious, the roast beef melted in our mouths and the veggies were colourful and full of flavour. We even thought this may be our best roast yet!

Full to the brim, we headed back to our beach retreat to make the most of our last few hours. Quick cup of coffee and a last gaze at the sea, we were sad to leave but felt completely relaxed and satisfied with our luxury weekend getaway, bringing home lots of lovely memories to cherish forever.

Laura stayed at Little Sur, our stunning retreat in Whitsand Bay, Cornwall. Sleeping 4 and dog friendly, you can read more about it here.
