Moors Valley Country Park, Dorset

Moors Valley Country Park, Dorset

Nestled in Dorset close to the Hampshire border, the park is looked after by both the Forestry Commission and the Dorset Council and combines environmental education with lots of fun. With miles of walking paths, cycling tracks, steam railway and even a tree-top trail, there is always a different way to take in the stunning sights.

So where to begin? If you have children with you, then Moors Valley Country Park is a wonderful choice. Take them along the mile-long play trail and let them crawl through the giant Ant’s Nest, slither through the Snake Pit and brave the Crocodile Crossing. Then turn your eyes skyward: that’s your next destination. Atop the trees Go-Ape’s Tree Top Adventure and Tree Top Junior courses let fearless explorers navigate the lush canopies and take in the park from a birds-eye view.

If that’s not enough, there are two fantastic imaginative play areas located near the Visitor Centre, too. Catering for both young and older children, the play areas include a zip slide, space net, climbing boulder, fortress of towers, slides and swings. However old your little one is, they won’t fail to be thoroughly entertained.

Depending on how long you have got to spend at the park, there are countless activities to get involved in. While away the hours along the park’s colour-coded footpaths and absorb the scenery. Thick woodland, freshwater lakes and rivers provide picturesque backdrops, and the park’s wildlife inhabitants can often be seen along the way. One such trail, the mile and a half long Lookout Trail, is a particular favourite amongst park staff as it affords incredible views across the valley.

Take in the park at a leisurely pace with the downloadable ‘Ranger in Your Pocket’ Audio Trail or go up a gear and follow a cycle route. If you don’t have your own bike, they can be rented from the park and there are even cycle lessons available for those looking for a little confidence boost. If you’d like to try something different, a steam train takes passengers on a scenic route along Moors Lake, and GoApe Forest Segways can be hired for another kind of two-wheeled adventure.

However you envisage your perfect trip, Moor Valley Country Park is sure to provide a day full of moments and memories.  Make sure you keep an eye on the range of events taking place throughout the year and let your heart and mind loose in nature.
