A 265 acre site, the Teifi Marshes Nature Reserve is one of the richest and most diverse wetland sites in Wales. Comprising of open pasture, wooded hedgerows, alder and willow scrub, freshwater marsh and more, the site is a haven for wildlife. With numerous species of birds paying a visit or taking up permanent residence at the reserve, it is an excellent place to haul up with a pair of binoculars and flask of hot tea.
Lying across a pre-glacial channel, the reserve is now dissected by the river Piliau, which gently weaves its way through the marshes. Although in summer diverse habitat is on show, in winter there is extensive flooding, attracting lots of different species of birds such as teal, wigeon, snipe and curlew. If you are lucky, you might spot peregrines as they hunt over the marshes, as immensely powerful as they are elegant.
With a choice of tarmac paths, boardwalks and woodland track, visitors have ample opportunity to explore the reserve on foot. If you’d prefer to go by bike, the ‘Cardi Bach’ traffic-free cycle trail offers a lovely route around the site. As you stroll around the reserve, keep an eye out for red deer and otters. You may even be able to see the impressive water buffalo who graze for certain periods of the year.
A very family-friendly site, Teifi Marshes Nature Reserve provides a wonderful day out. If you have children in your party, make sure you head over to the exciting adventure playground by the Wildlife Centre and see if you can master the willow maze. You may also come across a certain enormous willow badger, so make sure you wave hello.
The Welsh Wildlife Centre at the reserve offers lots of information about local walks and wildlife, and also has toilets, a gift shop and the Glasshouse Café. Opening daily, the café serves delicious homemade lunches and snacks to keep you fuelled.
Throughout the summer, children’s activities take place daily and the site remains dog-friendly year-round, as long as they are kept on a lead.
