Bexhill-on-Sea

Bexhill-on-Sea

Whilst some may believe Bexhill-on-Sea to be a sleepy little town, it in fact has a fascinating history with many intriguing claims under its belt. Not only is Bexhill the birthplace of British motor racing, it was also the first the town to allow mixed bathing on its beaches at the turn of the century and was the location of Bob Marley’s first ever UK gig.

Peddlers of liberation, advocates of fast cars and supporters of great music, Bexhill is like your cool older brother. And yet, these days, it remains a laidback place to visit, attracting fewer crowds than neighbouring Eastbourne and Brighton.

So what is there to do in this delightful seaside town? Well, plenty. Home to beautiful Victorian and Edwardian architecture, Bexhill-on-Sea proffers a wonderful mix of classic and contemporary. Once a popular seaside resort, it retains many period characteristics that add to the town’s character and charm. Whether you are exploring its streets, relaxing on the beach or trying your hand at a new activity, there is ample to do for both young and old, two legs and four.

To really get a flavour of Bexhill, a visit to the Grade I listed De La Warr Pavilion is a must. First opened in 1935 for concerts and events, the pavilion was later re-opened in October 2005 and is now a national centre for contemporary arts. One of the most important arts venues in the south east of England, it is absolutely worth a visit whether you are an avid art-lover or simply want to have a look around.

For a dose of history, Bexhill Museum offers information about the town’s history, famous residents and historic milestones. Take a journey through time and then head outdoors to dive into the present. Home to veritable playground, countless activities are on offer to help you carpe diem. Head to Egerton Park to stretch your legs, or hire a kayak and go for an aquatic adventure.

Whoever and however many are in your gang, fall under Bexhill’s spell and let your feet lead the way.
