The Hardwick, Abergavenny

The Hardwick, Abergavenny

Basking in glorious countryside views, the landscapes all around the Hardwick pub spread out and roll lazily over the horizon in a cacophony of greens. An attractive building with white-washed walls, the pub is adjoined by a generously-sized car park – an indication of how popular it has become.

Managed by a skilled team, the show is led by owner and Head Chef, Stephen Terry. Trained by Marco-Pierre White in Harvey’s in London, Terry went onto work for Michel Roux Jr at La Gavroche before heading back to London once more working under White and Michael Caine. By the age of 25, Terry had been awarded his first Michelin star.

Working head chef jobs, travelling, establishing restaurants and honing his skills, Terry’s path eventually led him to Wales. Upon his commute one day, he happened to pass a local pub that was on the market. Terry was enamoured and within four weeks of purchase, the Hardwick was born. Touted by many celebrities and chefs, the restaurant has been plonked firmly on the culinary map, with chef Greg Wallace stating that Terry’s “dishes at the Hardwick are outstanding”.

These days, the pub extends a warm welcome to everyone and serves a menu rich in flavour and variety. Echoing Terry’s love of unfussy, appetizing meals that diners can connect with, the menus are simple to read yet complex in skill. Avoiding pretentious descriptions and stunted choice, the menus are less conversation and definitely more action.

Producing a hugely varied selection, the Hardwick ensures that everyone can find something to sink their teeth into and fall into food-induced bliss. Constantly serving up old favourites with new additions, the palates of all diners are well catered for. Sourcing many ingredients close to home, the Hardwick uses local producers and handpicks ingredients to maintain the highest quality throughout.

Whether you are enjoying a light bar bite like Spanish Pelotin olives with a glass of Sicilian Fiano, or are opting for a main such as the braised rabbit with a delicate Welsh Pinot Noir, the choice is yours. Serving up meat-based dishes, vegan-friendly options and catering for all dietary requirements with a little notice, you can look forward to an unforgettable meal at the Hardwick.
