Exeter Cathedral

Exeter Cathedral

One of England’s most impressive and oldest cathedrals, Exeter Cathedral has been standing proud in the city centre for nearly 1000 years. Boasting a glorious mixture of Norman and Gothic architecture and hosting a range of interesting events and display, this is one of Devon’s top attractions and a must-visit whilst in Exeter.

Step through the doors of England’s most intricate and glorious historical building, Exeter Cathedral. Exeter’s most popular attraction was first founded in 1050 and began being constructed in 1114. The Cathedral is known for its two Norman Towers, unbroken stretch of beautiful Gothic vaulting, its gorgeous stained-glass windows and its unique carved image screen on the west front. Though seemingly a polished gem, there is always restoration and conservation work going on in the background to keep this beauty in tip top shape and it means that with each visit to this landmark, you’re bound to see something new.

Still working as a place of worship, the Cathedral also opens its doors to visitors for guided tours, unique events and interesting displays. Lose yourself in the rich history of this building either with an audio tour at your own pace or with an expert in a group tour; learn about major events and important figures who influenced the Cathedral into becoming what it is today. You can also explore the Ring Chamber Roof in the south tower; learn about the art of bell ringing and what goes on in the day to day workings of the bells.

Exeter Cathedral is a hub of activity offering the chance for artistic minds to host art exhibitions, events and displays – including music. One must not forget about the fabulous and talented choir and musicians whose music you can even hear from outside the building, but you will want to get the best seats in the house to truly appreciate the beautiful music created here. And after a day of exploring, you can immerse yourself in the beautiful architecture and enjoy a light lunch or a sought-after Devon Cream Tea in the popular Cathedral Café; sit by the stained glass windows and watch the hustle and bustle of Exeter city.
