Established in 1952, Fowey Aquarium is found on Fowey’s historic town quay. Providing visitors with a fascinating glimpse into watery worlds, the aquarium is devoted to proudly sharing the marine life found around the Cornish coast. Welcoming both visitors and locals alike, the aquarium seeks to share the joys of our natural world and protect through education.
Although small in size, Fowey Aquarium proffers a wonderful few hours of entertainment for all generations. Home to a number of tanks and displays, there is always something new to see with every turn. Kids in particular will love the immersive displays, including the touch pool overseen by friendly staff. Embrace the opportunity to have your hands tickled by a prawn, or if you’re really brave, pick up a Cornish shore crab.
As you make your way around the aquarium, the eagle-eyed among you will be able to spot numerous species of fish. From tiny gobies, to brill and bass, to the formidable conger eels, you can witness the mesmerising variety of life found both around our shores and in deeper, offshore waters too. Of course, the tanks are also home to lots of types of crabs and lobsters, so keep your eyes peeled to see as many as you can.
Still featuring some of the aquarium’s original tanks and updated with new, the aquarium operates using fresh seawater, pumped in daily at high tide. Simulating real conditions, this sometimes means that water clarity in the tanks isn’t always brilliant but is great for the all tank’s residents, and even means that new creatures make their way in too, including sea-squirts and sponges.
With varied opening hours throughout the year, Fowey Aquarium can be visited on select days throughout winter and regularly between April and October. A nominal ticket fee applies, supporting the maintenance of the aquarium.
