Gordon Russell Design Museum, Broadway

Gordon Russell Design Museum, Broadway

Schooled in the Arts & Crafts tradition of the Cotswolds, but with no formal design training, Sir Gordon Russell believed the handcrafted tradition of British cabinet-making could be fused with the possibilities of the machine, making good design accessible to all.

From his workshop in Broadway, which is now home to the museum, Gordon Russell’s company gained an international reputation and had a profound influence on British industry, design and education. Russell’s influence as a designer, manufacturer, educationalist, writer and thinker is still felt in modern British design. Sir Terence Conran described him as, ‘One of those peculiarly English geniuses who are not given the full recognition they deserve.’

The Museum houses an extensive archive of design drawings, notebooks, marketing materials, photographs, lecture notes and correspondence relating to the Gordon Russell Company. You will also find a changing programme of exhibitions and events throughout the year.

Today, the Museum is passionate about supporting new designers and facilitates a number of design awards each year to recognise the work of emerging makers. The shop, ‘Plane & Saw’, brings the story up to the present day, showcasing the work of contemporary British designer-makers. Don’t miss the opportunity to browse the range of high quality gifts, which includes jewellery, ceramics, books and cards.

Whilst in Broadway, there are many lovely pubs, cafes and galleries to explore. We recommend a visit to the Lygon Arms for lunch or afternoon tea. As a young man, Gordon Russell helped his father restore and repair furniture for the Lygon. It is said his experience working alongside skilled craftsmen here led to his interest in furniture design and the Arts & Crafts movement.

The Gordon Russell Design Museum opens from February until Christmas. Check their website for opening times and admission charges.
