With a guest book containing a glittering cast of names including King Edward VIII, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, The Lygon Arms is one of the most prestigious and well-known hotels in the Cotswolds. If you are visiting the beautiful village of Broadway, take the opportunity to treat yourself to lunch, dinner or afternoon tea.
Dating all the way back to the 1300s, this former coaching inn was once a staging post between London and Wales, as well as hosting Oliver Cromwell and King Charles I during the English Civil War. No surprise then that The Lygon Arms today is full of cosy fireplaces, grand paintings, vaulted ceilings and 17th century wood panelling, all conveying a grand sense of history.
Afternoon tea is a quintessentially English tradition and there’s no better place to enjoy it than in The Lygon’s Terrace restaurant or, if the sun is shining, out in the courtyard. Think elegant finger sandwiches filled with local ingredients such as baked ham with Tewkesbury mustard or Coln Valley smoked salmon. Follow this with crumbly scones, strawberry jam, clotted cream and a decadent selection of delicate cakes and pastries, washed down with a pot of tea or even a glass of Veuve Clicquot.
The Lygon Wine Bar opens for lunch and dinner offering Italian-style dishes. Depending on season, you may find creamy burrata with heritage tomatoes, sharing antipasti plates, crispy pizzettas, fresh pasta and risottos. There’s a comprehensive wine list, as well as beer brewed in the Cotswolds. Don’t miss their tempting tiramisu!
The Lygon Bar & Grill makes for a beautiful setting for dinner. The historic dining room, with its wood panelled walls and vaulted ceiling is enhanced with elegant, contemporary furnishings. The grill offers a seasonal British menu, celebrating local produce and showcasing free range meat and sustainably sourced fish. You may find such delights as a 30-day aged rib eye steak, Cotswold’s white chicken supreme or grilled Dover sole, along with a comprehensive vegan menu.
Wellington Sunday is something to celebrate at The Lygon Arms. As well as traditional roasts for Sunday lunch, you’ll find a Scotch beef and a Chadbury market vegetable Wellington with all the trimmings. Round off a mouthwatering meal with a bitter chocolate tart or traditional fruit crumble.
