Located in Twigworth, close to the city of Gloucester, Nature in Art has developed a well-deserved reputation for being the world’s first museum and art gallery dedicated to decorative, applied and fine art inspired by nature. This fascinating museum and gallery offers plenty to inspire all ages.
Nature in Art opened in 1988 with the aim of collecting, displaying and celebrating art inspired by nature. Its unrivalled collection is housed in a grand Georgian mansion, which dates back to the 18th century and has been named as one of ‘England’s 1000 best houses.’
While evidence of animal paintings has been found as far back as 25,000 BC, it was not until the last four centuries that animals have again become a focus of artwork. With the recent surge of interest in conservation, there is a new awareness of the value of fine works of art depicting the natural world.
Nature in Art’s collection spans over 1500 years and includes work by over 600 artists, including Pablo Picasso and David Shepherd. Displays are regularly updated and there is an exciting programme of temporary exhibitions. Most are exhibitions unique to Nature in Art, but at certain times of year you will see touring exhibitions, such as the British Wildlife Photography Awards and the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.
While most of the artwork is displayed inside the house, don’t miss a wander through the lovely gardens where you will find a number of striking sculptures. Outside the main house, you will often encounter artists in residence going about their work in the studio. This offers a good opportunity to have a chat or even purchase a piece of art to take home. If all that art has made you hungry, light lunches, homemade cakes and snacks are available in the licensed coffee shop. The gift shop is filled with nature inspired prints, cards and crafts.
Younger visitors can enjoy the themed handling boxes, brass rubbing and an outside sculpture trail and small play area. During school holidays, there are usually organised activities.
Nature in Art opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm, as well as Bank Holiday Mondays (closed 24th to 26th December). Check their website for opening times and admission fees.
