Stonehenge

Stonehenge

From the days of its Neolithic and Bronze Age ancestors, Stonehenge has been witness to thousands years of history and remains one of the most mysterious historical sites in the world.

Built over 4,500 years ago, Stonehenge’s history is even further rooted than often believed. With Mesolithic posts raised to the north-west of the Stonehenge site sometime between 8,500 – 7,000BC, the area has long been a centre for spiritual activity. Inspiring pilgrims and historians alike for centuries, its stoic facades have given little away and even today hold the answers to many unsolved questions, including the most basic about who built it, and why?

Utterly captivating, a trip to Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site is an absolute must for everyone at some point. A masterpiece of engineering in a time when tools and technologies were at best rudimentary, it defies so much of modern comprehension. Consisting of a ring of giant standing stones, each around 13ft high, 7ft wide and weighing around 25 tons, the effort to transport and place these stones would have required meticulous planning and hundreds of people.
