Recently constructed, the Exe Estuary Trail in Devon covers 26 miles of a virtually level cycle and walkway that runs around the entire estuary – great for birdwatchers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
Linking Exmouth, Exeter and Dawlish and interspersed with lots of beautiful villages and towns, the Exe Estuary Trail is great for those looking to get a little closer to nature whilst still benefiting from excellent facilities close to hand. Easily accessible, it forms part of the South Coast NCN No.2 and offers walkers, joggers and cyclists the freedom to pick up and leave the estuary-bound trail at regular points – ideal for exploring and refuelling in one of the many pubs along the way!
Particularly popular amongst birdwatchers, the route not only offers somewhere peaceful to stroll along but also a fantastic opportunity to see birds. Busy with feathered activity in summer and peppered with migrant throngs of waders and wildfowl in winter, the estuary is one of the most important in Europe for wildlife and provides a year-round attraction. Keep your binoculars at the ready and see how many bird species you can spot from the trail or one of the super nature reserves en route like Topsham and Dawlish Warren.
Also a firm favourite amongst sports and fitness enthusiasts, the Exe Estuary Trail is the perfect terrain for bikes, 90% covered with tyre-friendly asphalt. If you don’t have your own wheels, you can hire them from many places nearby and enjoy the ride – with the added bonus of no hills to contend with! Otherwise, if you’d rather take your time, you can simply don a comfortable pair of shoes and walk as little or as far as you like. Suitable for all, children and dogs will have just as much fun exploring too, with ample to see and do along the way.
To add another dynamic to your day, you can also make the most of the different ferry services taking passengers across the estuary. From Starcross to Exmouth, Topsham to Exminster, Topsham to Turf Locks and Exeter Quay to Double Locks, you can mix up your journey and explore the wealth of shops and eateries, discover the area’s intriguing maritime history and of course, lap up the fresh air and beautiful views.
