On the edge of the Blackdown Hills near the Devon and Dorset borders, Sharandys Birds of Prey Centre in Chard, Somerset, is both a unique visitor attraction and a raptor rescue centre.
Sharandys Birds of Prey was established by Sharon Bailey, whose passion for caring for birds began at a tender age. Having rescued and subsequently rehabilitated a budgie from an attack by a wild bird when she was just 7 years old, Sharon’s love for avians was ignited and her future in the feathered world sealed. Training as a falconer in 2003, Sharon was accompanied on her way by a female Harris hawk called Kiya and a beautiful barn owl named Breeze.
Having opened the doors of Sharandys Birds of Prey centre in 2007, Sharon is now at the heart of a unique visitor attraction and raptor rescue and rehabilitation centre in Chard. With dozens of resident birds and animals and countless sick and injured rescues, it is a veritable hive of activity. A great way to learn about these amazing birds and the work of the centre, visitors can look forward to hands-on meetings with the resident birds through Bird of Prey courses and Experience Days.
If you are interested in learning more about the UK’s birds of prey and would like to make the most of opportunities to handle and fly majestic species, you should consider the centre’s half and full-day experiences. During both the half and full-day sessions, you will enjoy group birds of prey displays on the lawn, informative talks, training and flying demonstrations and free time around the centre, where you can meet, feed and even hold some of the resident animals.
For a more exclusive encounter, you can also take part in one of Sharandy’s one-to-one experiences or courses. With the luxury of a dedicated experience away from groups, you can take part in adventures with owls and birds of prey and an introduction to falconry. One of the most popular options, the hawk walk offers an hour of wonder and exhilaration, walking with one of the centre's hawks and being thrilled by displays of unparalleled aerial agility and grace.
