Welcome to this stunning, historical homestay, nestled in the heart of the pretty coastal town of Fowey. With records dating back as far as the 1700's, The Mariner's House is a tall, imposing town house that's been occupied by seafaring families throughout the years.
Due to its sympathetic restoration, the house today retains its gorgeous original features including wooden beams, an inglenook fireplace, wooden panelling, and original floorboards, all with a story to tell of its long maritime past. A notable feature of The Mariner's House is a spring fed well located in the cellar, recorded as far back as 1344!
Today, you'll discover a unique seaside retreat, a calm oasis in a bustling town with stunning river views, exquisite interiors, and a warm welcome. With dreamy, natural tones throughout, each room is just lovely with four bedrooms, three of which are en suite, and plenty of living space. And it's dog friendly too! Outside is a sunny courtyard garden whilst you're just steps from the town centre with its plethora of eateries and independent shops.
Fowey is located on the glorious south Cornish coast, and is the perfect base from which to explore, whether it's visiting The Eden Project, The Lost Gardens of Heligan, the South West Coastal Path or the many amazing beaches all just a short drive away.
Special lower occupancy rate
A special lower occupancy rate applies outside of school holidays, peak weeks, bank holidays, Christmas and New Year. For four guests and under the discount is 20%. Please note that only bedrooms one and two will be available for you at this rate. Please call the office on 01872 553491 to book.
Living
The stunning sitting room is just a delight, where original artworks and an antique map of Fowey line the panelled walls, whilst two deep cushioned, nautical striped linen sofas, a snug window seat and upholstered 'prayer' chair offer plenty of seating on which to sprawl. With a Smart TV and Sonos WiFi speaker for entertainment, the sitting room also offers a separate working from home office area, with a limewashed oak desk adorned with two chunky wooden table lamps. Light the Aga woodburning stove and curl up with a good book on a stormy afternoon - bliss!
Opposite the sitting room is a super cosy media room, with a 65" Smart TV, Sonos beam soundbar and wall mounted Sonos surround sound speakers. Snuggle up in the sheepskin rugs scattered on the two-deep cushioned snuggler chairs, prop your feet up on the upholstered footstool and pour yourself a drink from the drinks trolley and settle down for an evening at the 'cinema'! There are also family board games and cards, for rainy days in front of the wood burner.
Eating
The exquisite, handmade 'Charlie Kingham' kitchen, with a white Caesarstone worktop, is just a dream for the beginner cook or professional chef alike and is just lovely to cook meals in. As well as a clever 'tea and toast' unit designed to hide the Nespresso machine, microwave, kettle and toaster, and plenty of workspace on the kitchen island, it's stocked with all the essentials such as a Rangemaster gas and electric cooker, dishwasher, washer/dryer and integrated fridge.
Perch on one of the oak stools around the kitchen island or enjoy the views whilst washing up overlooking the yachts moored at Pont Creek. We just love the antique painted Indian larder cupboard for food storage!
The dining room is perfectly sized for long lazy lunches or a dinner party seating eight, with additional bench seating, a two-seater linen sofa and an armchair in front of the wood burner in the Inglenook fireplace, ready to light up during those winter evenings. There is also the added warmth of underfloor heating to keep toes cosy warm.
Take the stairs down to the cobbled cellar, where you'll discover the original 14th century well. There is a large supply of firewood kept here, as well as storage should you need it.
Sleeping
There are four gorgeous bedrooms to choose from, all with classic décor with a subtle nod to its nautical setting and to complement the stunning river views.
On the first floor the first two luxurious bedrooms, one of which is en suite and the other has a shower across the landing.
The first bedroom boasts a super-king sized bed and en suite shower room. This is a 'zip and link' which means it can be made up as twins should you wish. It also benefits from bedside tables with a drawer in each and a wooden chest of drawers. There is a clothes hook for any hanging items and two chairs, the perfect spot for a quiet moment or two.
Bedroom two also has a super-king bed (and is also a zip and link bed) and use of the family shower room across the landing. It's gorgeously decorated with a single wardrobe, for hanging clothes, a chest of drawers and two bedroom chairs.
Bedroom three lies on the top floor and has an astonishing floor to ceiling double door overlooking the river, a gorgeous Juliet balcony and a double bed with en suite shower room. Beautifully decorated, there's also built-in shelving in the eaves for clothes and a cupboard for hanging clothes.
On the landing is a stunning freestanding cast iron Bateau bath area, with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the river - the perfect spot for a deep soak with a glass of something special, watching the boats potter by.
The fourth bedroom offers a king size bed, another floor to ceiling double door overlooking the river, a gorgeous Juliet balcony and has an en-suite shower room, White Company bedside lamps and stools, a wardrobe and shelves built in to the eaves.
All of the beds come swathed in Egyptian cotton linen, White Company bedding and luxurious throws and cushions. All the bath/shower rooms have heated rails to keep towels warm and fluffy. There is also a cloakroom on the landing on the ground floor.
Outdoor space
The 'Mediterranean' styled enclosed slate courtyard garden with its giant olive pot and lavender plants has a large sofa and fire pit table for al fresco dining, as well as a barbeque for lazy summer evenings. This is an idyllic spot for entertaining on warm sunny days before exploring the restaurants and bars in Fowey. A wooden gate leads out through the whitewashed stone wall on to the lane behind the sailing club and path leading either directly into town, or steps down to the river.
On the water
During your stay at The Mariner's House, you're offered temporary membership of the Gallants Sailing Club (membership can be organised directly with the club upon arrival at a small fee). With a full annual sailing program, a thriving junior section and a well-run sociable club, members can come for a drink and enjoy the riverside views with their families.
Parking
Parking is available in one of the nearby public car parks.
Babies and children
Babes in arms and children over the age of six are most welcome. A highchair and travel cot is available on request. Please note that there are seven flights of stairs throughout the property and that there is a gate in the courtyard garden that leads directly on to the marina and out on to the river.
