We're extremely honoured to welcome you to this wonderful retreat, our first in the stunning region of Derbyshire and set close by the incredible Peak District.

Set within the grounds of a country estate, on which a house has stood since the 12th Century and where its renowned private gardens have thrived since the late 18th Century, this is an extraordinary home full of historic charm and a wonderful country escape away from the busyness of modern life.

Nightingale, at the end of a long private drive, is just three hours from London and in the middle of the Derbyshire Dales. It is a wonderful dog friendly retreat for families, friends or couples seeking a spacious homestay, whether for a long weekend or more. Step inside and you'll discover a luxurious, beautiful home full of historic charm; it's not hard to imagine Georgian ladies residing here, gazing out over the gorgeous gardens!

With two bedrooms and two bath and shower rooms and spacious living areas, there's opportunity for everyone to find a peaceful spot, whilst outside a pretty garden awaits with outside dining and lawns for games.

Today the country estate is a sheep farm set close to Ashbourne, a thriving and picturesque market town on the edge of the Peak District. You'll find plenty of things to see and do, whether it's visiting the historic houses of Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and Kedleston Hall or donning your walking boots and exploring the stunning Derbyshire Dales and Peak District.

Living

The stunning sitting room is simply beautiful, providing a peaceful setting to relax in whatever time of year. During warmer weather, the French windows can be opened on to the terrace, allowing fresh air to flow through when escaping the heat of the day. During winter months, snuggle down in front of the roaring open fire, its flickering flames simply mesmerising when lights are down low. A huge, comfy sofa and two armchairs provide plenty of room to relax, whilst there's a television for film and box set nights. For those who need to keep in touch with the outside world, there is both fibre broadband and good 4G reception.

Eating

The wonderful country kitchen is just a delight, and the oil-fired Aga is at its heart, offering a cosy warmth that permeates throughout the room. With a Victorian dresser displaying Willow pattern tableware and a scrubbed oak table, there's a real sense of vintage style, but don't be fooled - this room is equipped with all the modern necessities a cook needs to rustle up feasts.

With the dining table set here too, it's also a wonderful setting for cosy mealtimes together, whilst during warmer months the French door can be opened out on to the terrace to let the soft summer breeze waft through.

In addition, there's a separate boot room with butler sink, where the washing machine is kept.

Sleeping and bathing

There are two exquisite bedrooms to choose from.

The en suite bedroom is extremely beautiful, where romantic country-inspired tones of pale green and yellow blend together effortlessly to create a blissfully calm, inviting retreat to escape to at the end of a busy day exploring the gorgeous countryside. A sumptuous king sized bed awaits for long, luxurious lie ins whilst a walk in wardrobe and chest of drawers offers plenty of space for storage. An armchair provides a quiet spot, perfect for late night reading or a wake-me-up cup of tea. The en suite has a bath and dual aspect windows. Views from both the bedroom and bathroom look down towards the orchard and lake beyond.

The second bedroom with wonderful dual aspect windows has a fabulous zip-and-link bed, meaning it can be set up as twins or as a super king bed, offering flexible sleeping arrangements that can be changed for your specific requirements. A wardrobe and chest of drawers provides plenty of storage space for your belongings. Its own separate shower room lies next door.

Both bedrooms come swathed in luxurious linens, sumptuous bedding and pretty throws and cushions to ensure a deep nights' sleep. Both the shower room and en suite bathroom have heated rails to keep towels warm and fluffy plus delightful Bramley products.

In addition, there's a downstairs cloakroom with loo.

Outside space

The large open garden awaits as you step through the French doors on to the terrace. Here, you'll find a teak beach and chairs, the perfect spot for morning coffee or afternoon tea. In front there's a large expanse of lawn, perfect for games of cricket, whilst a loggia, with brick floor and pretty lighting, offers a wonderful space for outside dining. A teak table and chairs plus a Weber barbeque are set up within for alfresco dining - what better way to spend a balmy summer's evening!

In addition, there are four deck chairs for lounging on the lawn, an outside tap for washing down muddy dogs and an old stable which can be used to store bikes.

A gate at the bottom of the garden leads directly into a pretty orchard and out into private parkland, where you will find a wide range of footpaths - one leading to a delightful gastro pub.

History lovers will adore the plethora of historic country estates to visit, most notably Chatsworth House, home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and the National Trusts' Kedleston Hall, an 18th Century mansion with vast parkland to explore. For nature lovers and keen walkers, the Derbyshire Dales and Peak District are right on your doorstep and offer trails and paths galore to explore, as well as a host of gorgeous beauty spots for a picnic or two. Don't forget to bring your walking boots or bikes! We know how gorgeous our retreats are, but don’t just take our word for it – here’s what previous guests say about Nightingale:

A truly relaxing place to stay. Extremely comfortable and with beautiful surroundings.

We had fantastic two weeks in the manor farm house, the dogs loved the fenced huge garden and the surrounding fields for brilliant doggy walks (on leads). The house is well furnished with everything you need, the cosy AGA was lovely in the autumn time. We can highly recommend Nightingale.

Simon and his family were brilliant hosts, so helpful and yet so unintrusive. The house is absolutely gorgeous, comfortable and spacious. The garden is wonderful and perfect for both our doggies and for us. The location is brilliant too, it’s close to the peaks but away from the tourist hordes and Ashbourne itself is charming. We’d definitely jump at the chance to return!

The house, the location, were all superb. We would revisit at the drop of a hat.

This was our second stay at Nightingale and it didn’t disappoint. The welcome hamper was superb, as was the host who allowed my son to visit the new lambs frequently during our stay. The property is beautiful, so peaceful and the epitome of a country house stay. The interiors are stunning and the garden is immaculate (the perfect place for an Easter egg hunt during our stay!). We feel so comfortable staying at Nightingale with our family and dog, just effortlessly relaxing and homely. We hope to visit for a third time soon!

Great property full of character. Helpful hosts. Stunning farm location.

Wonderful, secluded property. So beautifully decorated and comfortable. The hamper was a nice surprise and Simon the owner was so friendly, giving us local recommendations. A perfect stay and a special way to spend our Christmas - we hope to return.

Gorgeous property, beautifully decorated, lovely linen and comfy beds. Lovely and warm property with Aga in the kitchen as a bonus. Super tasty hamper on arrival with beautiful local produce. Fresh flowers. Great family break. Top notch - would highly recommend and hope to return.

Excellent. Private, welcoming, cosy retreat - exactly what we needed. The master bedroom was huge. The lounge was an incredible place to relax.

Wonderful owners; very attentive & hospitable.

Beautiful surroundings, quite isolated. Beautiful soft furnishings and lacking very little. Gorgeous house!

Nightingale is one of the most charming places we have stayed . It is a beautiful little house with a fabulous garden and outlook . We were all extremely relaxed and found the whole house very comfortable and easy to live in with our two little dogs

Beautiful house and location, utter bliss! Better than expected and exceeded all our expectations. Having sheep all around us was lovely and we really felt the peace and quiet of nature at its best. The house and garden were stunning, immaculately designed and presented and provided all we could have needed. Everything felt so clean and the fresh flowers were the perfect little touch. The beautiful welcome hamper was also a delight! We cannot wait to stay again!

Nightgale cotrage is absolutely delightful, the perfect retreat for peace and quiet and total relaxation. The surrounding countryside is beautiful too.

Lovely well proportioned accommodation of an extremely high standing in the most beautiful country setting. We (& the Dogs) loved it and may well return this year.

The Lodge was delightful; the location idyllic. Highly recommended.

Fabulous dog friendly stay on a working farm - especially lovely to see the new lambs. Cosy house and near to gorgeous walks in the nearby Peak District.

Absolutely brilliant in every way and exceeded our expectations. We felt very at home, everything was spotlessly clean and the house was fitted out with everything you need. We really didn’t expect a hamper with such lovely goodies, these little touches around the home made us feel very welcome. Overall we loved staying at Nightingale and would highly recommend. When visiting family in the future it will be our first choice of accommodation in the area.

Great warm home atmosphere, did not want to be anywhere else. Very relaxing, exactly what we needed. Special place to escape busy work lives.

Lovely location with views. Very comfortable bed and bedding and the soft furnishings matched the style of the property.

An amazing location The house was beautiful Thank you

Absolutely lovely place, very thoughtful wonderful hosts. Exceeding the expectations truly! Idyllic views, cosy and stylish interiors, feeling of crispy cleanness all the stay. No one wanted to leave! Lots of historical places within 1 hour, but to stay and just enjoy the surroundings is worthy by itself. Will come back in summer! Thank you!

Absolutely beautiful house and location as well as thoughtful extra touches such as freshly baked bread, champagne and treats for the dogs. I’d highly recommend! We loved our stay and didn’t want to leave.

Excellent- more than a cottage- and very well appointed. A perfect retreat.

Lucy and Simon are excellent hosts, very friendly and helpful. We felt immediately at home in this cosy and tidy house. It provides absolute privacy, calm and a lovely view of the landscape. We would love to come back.

A very comfortable retreat, beautifully furnished.

It is absolutely charming and our dog was particularly happy!

Lovely cottage in a beautiful and relaxing location.

It was a beautiful house in a stunning location, and the owners were lovely. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a quiet getaway away from it all.

We spent a fabulous week at Nightingale, which is situated in a beautiful location. The property was spotless and had everything we could have asked for. We felt instantly at home. We loved cooking on the aga. The beds and sofas were extremely comfortable. There are lots of lovely walks, pubs and villages nearby to visit. Our week flew by and we look forward to staying at Nightingale again.

Beautiful, warm and so comfortable. The open fire and Aga were lovely and the beds the most comfortable I’ve slept in! Welcome hamlet was great. Can’t fault anything.

This was the most beautiful cottage. Very warm and homely. We loved it.

Superb quality cottage. Very well appointed and beautifully designed interiors. Just wish it had been summer and we could have enjoyed the outside dining areas.
Instructions and restaurant/pub recommendations were all excellent

We loved Nightingale so much I'm almost reluctant to say how great it is in case it's booked solid next time we want to visit! It was a real treat to spend time in such beautiful surroundings and we felt very well-looked after by our hosts, who went above and beyond to ensure we had a wonderful holiday.

Excellent cottage in a fabulous quiet rural position
