Welcome to our very first retreat on the glorious island of Mull, a true wilderness escape away from it all. Set on a family estate on the Croggan peninsular, Fern Cottage lies nestled close to the seashore and is surrounded by untouched land, inhabited by sheep and cows as well as a plethora of wildlife including deer, otters, eagles and sea birds.

Step through the doors of Fern Cottage and you'll receive a warm Scottish welcome, where traditional cottage features blend effortlessly with modern comforts, and where natural colours and fabrics complement the extraordinary views, creating a homestay that's in sync with its surroundings whilst also offering luxurious sumptuousness.

Perfect for families and couples alike, this is an escape for those who want to get away from it all; no WiFi makes this an ideal spot for a digital detox, whilst the surrounding habitation makes it a paradise for wildlife lovers and walkers. It's also dog friendly, meaning your four-legged companion can come along too. Please note that due to its remoteness, shops and restaurants are quite a drive away, ideal for those wanting a truly wild experience.

Mull is a stunning Scottish island with so much to see, whether it's the beautiful sandy beaches, taking the ferry across to the smaller island of Iona, donning walking boots and hiking the untouched landscape or visiting the colourful town of Tobermory with its picturesque buildings.

Living and eating

Fern Cottage boasts a spacious open plan living, kitchen and dining space, making it a lovely communal space to come together. With fresh green wood panelled walls in the traditional style of Mull, a vaulted ceiling and warm wooden floors, it's a bright, airy space.

At the far end of the room, you'll discover a wonderful wood burner set in its own exposed stone fireplace, flanked by two comfy cream sofas - the perfect spot for unwinding after a day's exploring. There's a TV and DVD player for film nights, whilst a fab record player with Bluetooth is on hand for when you want to create a soundtrack to your holiday, plus games, toys and books lie in the wooden chest for a more traditional evenings' fun. There's also a pair of Zeiss binoculars for you to use to spot otters, sea eagles, golden eagles, deer and seals as well as a host of bird life.

At the other end of the room lies the kitchen complete with a Rangemaster electric cooker, large central island with Butler sink, fridge and freezer, dishwasher and washing machine, plus a cafetière for coffee and all the other essentials you'll need to rustle up feasts. We just love the vintage pieces that adorn the shelf above the stove, plus the pretty window overlooking the garden.

In the centre of the room lies the wooden dining table, the perfect spot for breakfasts on the go and long leisurely dinners. Make sure to check out The Old Post Office nearby to pick up meat bred on the estate and other excellent island produce to make your stay a truly authentic Scottish escape.

Sleeping

Fern cottage has two lovely bedrooms to choose from.

The first is a beautiful, welcoming room with a super comfy king-sized bed. With warm, earthy tones used throughout with red accents, this is a rich, cosy escape at the end of the day and comes complete with a chest of drawers, hanging space for clothes and seating.

The second bedroom has a bed which can be a super king double or an oh-so-sweet twin bedroom (perfect for little ones or friends), for flexible sleeping options. Calming colours and warm oranges create a tranquil ambience whilst there's a chest of drawers and hanging space for clothes.

Fern's tucked away, tranquil location means that you'll fall asleep to nothing but the sound of the sea and the wind through the trees, and you'll wake up to birdsong and the occasional lowing of the cows - what could be more perfect?

Bathing

The spacious family bathroom boasts both a bath for long soaks - perfect for unwinding muscles after a day's hiking - and a large walk-in shower, ideal for helping you wake up after a blissful nights' sleep. There's a heated rail to ensure towels are kept warm and fluffy.

Outdoor space

With no boundaries to speak of, Fern Cottage sits comfortably within the wilderness, with a grassy slope leading down to a single track road and the water's edge beyond. Surrounded by trees, it's idyllically tucked away. There's a table and chairs for you to sit outside and gaze over the sea, whilst a bench sits close to the cottage wall, a perfect spot for morning coffee or pre-dinner drinks, watching the extensive views. With no fences, you can certainly expect a visitor or two, be it a grazing cow or the resident peacock!

Parking

There is plenty of off road, private parking.

Babies and children

Babies and children are most welcome at Fern Cottage. Please bring your own baby equipment with you. Children will need to be supervised outside, as the garden is not fenced and there is a road and cows nearby as well as the seashore within a short distance.

Dogs

Up to two well behaved dogs are welcome at Fern Cottage. Please be aware that Fern Cottage may have cows grazing immediately outside the property and there is also a resident peacock, so please ensure dogs are supervised at all times. Please note, there is an additional fee per dog, per week or short break.

WiFi

Please note that due to its gloriously remote location, there is no WiFi at Fern Cottage but 4G reception is generally good.

In the Area

Fern Cottage lies on the Croggan peninsular which lies in the southeast of Mull, making it perfectly situated to explore this wonderful island. It's an easy drive to traverse the island, with exquisite mountain views and gloriously sandy beaches on your route - just pack your boots and your swimming costume, if you're feeling brave! To the north of the island lies the island's main town, Tobermory, a photographer's delight with multicoloured houses along the harbour. There are plenty of boat trips too, such as taking the ferry over to Iona, a gorgeous island home to an Abbey and Nunnery, nine stunning white sandy beaches and art and craft shops. Staffa and the Treshnish Islands are well worth a visit too, with Staffa home to Fingal's Cave (made famous by Felix Mendelssohn's Hebridean Overture) whilst you can also spot plethora of seabirds here such as puffins during the nesting season.

We know how gorgeous our retreats are, but don’t just take our word for it – here’s what previous guests say about Fern Cottage:

Fern Cottage is the most incredible place to stay. The interiors are stunning, the beds and linen are exceptionally comfortable and the isolated location on Loch Spelve is the perfect place to relax and escape the world and live in your own bubble.

Excellent stay and would return.

Fern cottage is beautiful and for us is in an ideal location, peaceful with so much wildlife on your doorstep. Loved it, we will be back.

An exquisite, remote property where wildlife surrounds you and the stresses of everyday life can melt away.

Thoughtful touches - tea bags, lovely hamper, toilet rolls and well stocked kitchen.

Well appointed in a peaceful location. Perfect for relaxing after a day exploring.

Beautiful location that provides a unique experience for a vacation that seeks to be at one with wildlife and nature.

What a beautiful peaceful retreat. ‘A little bit of heaven’. Complete relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of life. Couldn’t do anything but slow down and live in the moment. Well worth a visit .

Fabulous location and very comfortable cottage. We loved seeing otters from the front door and had many good sightings about 10 minutes walk away. Also, saw white-tailed eagles. As others have said, it's a long and slow drive to pick up provisions so I'd suggest bringing as much as you can with you. Recommend the local mussels from Inverussa across the loch.

Don’t want to comment as we don’t want it too popular. Booked for next year before we left!

Liked it so much we have already booked to return.

An amazing cottage in a stunning location. A really fantastic week.

This cottage was absolutely delightful. It has been furnished to a high standard and is beautiful inside. The location was perfect for anyone wanting a quiet location. The scenery is stunning and the neighbours were helpful and friendly. We can highly recommend Fern Cottage David and Jackie Smallwood

The location was absolutely spectacular and the cottage was in beautifully decorated and in fantastic condition. This was one of the best cottages we have ever stayed in .

.Fern Cottage is the most wonderful retreat in the most fabulous location. To wake up in the morning, completely undisturbed except for birdsong, looking out over the eye-wateringly beautiful loch was an absolute joy. The cottage itself was gorgeously decorated - completely to our taste - and there was plenty of space for us and our dogs. The colour schemes used really complemented the setting and it was clear that someone had put a lot of thought into making it perfect. We walked from the cottage every day, either along the loch or up onto the hills and the feeling of peace and tranquility was second to none. We even saw an otter swimming right in front of the cottage. Although Fern Cottage is remote, that is definitely part of its appeal and we thoroughly enjoyed some time out from our busy lives.

Beautiful property , lovely interiors, well stocked with utensils etc etc, located in a very remote breathtaking location, away from everything and everybody! Fern cottage is an absolute gem of a place , we will definitely revisit , it was everything we wanted and more , loved it!

Five stars, Fern Cottage was perfect. We loved the location, the cottage itself and how well equipped it was. We had everything we needed to cook a Christmas lunch (turkey with all the trimmings) and were pleased with how well outfitted the cottage is.

Fern cottage is just wonderful. The location is utterly breathtaking. The cottage was everything we wanted and more - it is comfortable, luxurious, well appointed and equipped and the interiors are gorgeous. Would definitely recommend and we will be back.

Such a cosy, beautifully designed traditional cottage in a secluded area of Mull. Fantastic for otter spotting. Please note that is a long drive to any shops so be sure to go prepared!

A wonderful retreat if you like nature, along with peace and quiet. Definitely need a car and be prepared to drive slowly for the last few miles to avoid the sheep and cows in the road - it all adds to the experience. Nice hamper on arrival, which was appreciated. Overall a special place and we would love to return.

A comfortable, well appointed and peaceful cottage in a wonderful setting. Perfect to get away from it all.

Fabulous cottage, interiors and remote location. Lovely hamper.

Absolutely beautiful cottage in the most idyllic spot. A real retreat from the stresses and strains of "real life". We could not get enough of the ever-changing landscape and loved it when the neighbours (sheep, cows, peacock and hens) dropped by. We could barely tear ourselves away from Fern Cottage to explore gorgeous Mull, but when we did it was a joy to return to. Yes, it's a long drive to anywhere...which suited us perfectly. Loved The Old Post Office (the nearest cafe/shop) too - it's well worth a visit.

An immaculately clean, and beautiful home, set in an idyllic location, ideal for recharging batteries and enjoying nature.

Great cottage and the perfect location. Loved our stay , Otters and Eagles on the doorstep of a lovely comfortable cottage

A wonderful retreat on the beautiful Isle of Mull. A haven of tranquility to return to after a day in nature with the spectacular wildlife the island has to offer

Beautiful location on Mull . if you need to get away from it all I recommend Fern cottage.

Beautiful cottage, amazing location, immaculately clean and everything you could wish for in a holiday cottage. Very very very quiet and a long way from anywhere …. Bliss

The cottage was an amazing retreat. Beautifully presented and great attention to detail . Spotlessly clean and an amazing welcome pack .

It was amazing in every way, we all absolutely loved it!

Fern Cottage did not disappoint. The cottage itself is beautiful and very well equipped with a lovely welcome package awaiting us. The location on Loch Spelve is stunning and we were lucky enough to see otters on a daily basis right outside the cottage. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend the cottage and will definitely return.

The perfect romantic isolated retreat. PERFECT IN EVERY WAY

There is no denying that Fern cottage is a beautiful property in a stunning location with amazing wildlife on the doorstep.

A beautiful retreat! The property is very well cared for and was lovely to have as a home for the week. There is a gorgeous view over the inlet and hills. We were lucky enough to see otters most mornings and the visiting peacock was charming. The antique music records, which were apparently found in the loft when the property was being renovated, were lovely to listen to as they had the old charm crackle, which we don't hear often these days. We did a few trips out and about but because the property and location are so lovely, it's just as enjoyable to stay in.

The house and location were both lovely, and we really enjoyed our stay

Fern cottage is the nicest cottage we have ever stayed in. It’s peaceful location and amazing surroundings make it the perfect place to relax for a week.

Wonderful isolation

Fern Cottage is the most amazing place to stay on Mull. The location is remote but beautiful and there are fabulous views from the cottage itself. The cottage is tastefully decorated, extremely clean and very well equipped.

Fabulous cottage in a tranquil setting, ideal for wildlife spotting including resident otter.

Outstanding location and stunning interiors. Straight out of a magazine!

Fern cottage is a stunning property which has been stylishly and tastefully renovated. The location is excellent with an open view, great for spotting wildlife and for admiring the scenery. The welcome pack was a lovely touch containing local goodies. As this was our first time on Mull we wanted to explore the island which resulted in a fair bit of driving, returning to Fern cottage though was a real treat.

Perfect holiday. Nothing to improve.

Fern Cottage is in a beautiful location, perfect for getting back to nature and away from the madness of the world. It was spotlessly clean on our arrival and we just loved how it was fitted and decorated - it's very, very chic. Within an hour of our arrival we saw an otter swimming past, and seals were regular visitors to the loch. If you've got an adventurous nature then Mull has a lot to offer with a wide variety of very stunning mountain and coastal scenery. We spent most of our time walking the coastline, paddle boarding and simply gazing out of the window.

Aesthetically stunning, whilst uncompromisingly practical and comfortable. The perfect retreat both inside and out.

Fern cottage was absolutely stunning. Authentically restored with all modern conveniences. Everything we needed to cook a Sunday roast and then relax by the open fire, listening to the gramaphone playing. This cottage is located in a beautifully quiet spot with all the islands wildlife to photograph close to the front door. Woud love to rebook!
