Nestled within sweeping countryside in an AONB yet only 15 miles from the historic city of York, The Grey Shed in Crayke is perfectly placed for spontaneous escapes and soothing sojourns. Welcoming up to two guests and two dogs, it inspires a romantic reel of hygge-filled moments to lift the soul. Flooded with natural light, the open-plan, Scandi-chic interiors are especially easy to fall in love with, finished with sumptuous furnishings and warmed by underfloor heating. Meanwhile, the daydream continues outside, where a private garden gives way to fruit-filled orchards, wildflower meadows and open countryside beyond. Relax by the crackling Burley wood burner, picnic under star-studded skies, and lose yourself to cityscapes and moorland scenes, all from our hideaway for the dreamers.

Wonderfully spacious, the open-plan, double-height living area at The Grey Shed encompasses a lounge, kitchen, and dining space. Clad in Nordic white wood walls, minimalist interiors adorned with vintage touches, curating in a cosy space for gathering and relaxing. The epitome of calm, this space benefits from large Crittall-style doors and windows which bathe rustic features in golden light. Lounge upon the Loaf sofa or settle on the rattan swing chair and idle away the hours, watching a film on the Smart TV or lost in the pages of a novel. To spin a cinematic soundtrack, play your favourite playlist through the Bluetooth speaker/sound bar or the B&O stereo and vinyl collection. For extra cosiness, you'll find underfloor heating throughout.

Eating and dining

Merging with the living area, the Scandi-inspired kitchen and dining area set an atmospheric scene for brunches and suppers at home. The deVOL kitchen features a Silestone worktop and vintage workbench island, creating plenty of space for rustling up feasts and gathering over a bottle of something special. Tastefully presented, everything you could need is provided for culinary prep, including a dishwasher, Bertazzoni cooker with induction hob, Smeg fridge and freezer and more. There's also a Nespresso machine for those aromatic morning blends. For dining in comfort and style, an oversized table with a vintage two-seater bench and four chairs reside under industrial pendant lights, ready for feasting together.

For extra convenience, a utility room can be found with a washing machine, tumble dryer, Butler sink, boot store and more - perfect for shedding layers after blustery moorland walks.

Sleeping and bathing

A soothing colour palette imbues the mezzanine bedroom with a real sense of serenity. Beckoning for moments of pure relaxation, it balances minimalist design, earthy flourishes and sumptuous furnishings for utmost cosiness. Set under a skylight, a super-king Divan bed, hanging rail, chest of drawers and Roberts radio paint the picture, while completing the scene is a freestanding, rolltop bath set within the eaves.

The main bathroom is located on the ground floor and harmonises slate-grey hues with white wood panelling. Well appointed, it has a large walk-in, rainfall shower and is warmed by toasty underfloor heating. On the first-floor mezzanine, a rolltop bath awaits for soothing soaks after hours of adventure.

Outside space

Enveloped by stunning North Yorkshire countryside in an AONB, the views from The Grey Shed beckon for outside living. Just lovely for those slow-paced mornings and balmy evenings kissed by a low sun, the garden features a dining table and bench, two loungers and a firepit BBQ. Festooned in twinkling lights, this sheltered suntrap provides a wonderfully private space for basking in nature or admiring starry nights. Beyond the garden, you can also make the most of access to wildflower meadows and fruit orchards, where mown paths lead to two further lounge chairs in the orchard inviting you to sit back, relax and enjoy the pastoral vistas and sunsets over the valley.

Private, off-road parking is available for two vehicles.

Topping the menu are The Black Swan in Oldstead, Star Inn in Harome and Grantley Hall in Ripon - each flourishing a well-deserved Michelin star. Closer to home, the fabulous, 300-year-old Durham Ox in Crayke is within walking distance of your front door and serves up delectable dishes of seasonal favourites. We know how gorgeous our retreats are, but don’t just take our word for it – here’s what previous guests say about The Grey Shed:

Very peaceful and luxurious stay. Facilities were excellent and the location was perfect

The Grey Shed was just perfect, beautiful interior, the hosts went above and beyond, location was great, a truly relaxing stay.

As above- Beautiful property with high quality but practical fittings and furnishings. The welcome pack was excellent The owners are very friendly and helpful but not at all intrusive. Having spent ages figuring out how to use appliances in holiday rentals in the past , the printed and laminated foolproof instructions were very welcome

Simply spectacular! If you're exploring York or Yorkshire and looking for a countryside escape, stop looking and book The Grey Shed. The design and decor are absolutely luxury. On clear nights you can watch the stars through the skylight while you lay in bed, and in the morning you can open the doors and enjoy your tea or coffee while listening to the sheep in the nearby pastures. It's a slice of heaven, and we'll definitely be back.

A fabulous stay in a beautiful property in a great location. The property is equipped with everything you need including a lovely hamper! We would recommend this stay to anyone looking to escape to the country.
