From the dramatic coastline of the north to the gorgeously cute coves and harbours of the south or the picture-perfect fishing villages to the rolling moors, Cornwall is a pretty spectacular setting for a bit of wooing. Combine this with a gorgeous Boutique Retreat for two where you can snuggle yourselves away (think roll top baths and the flickering light of a wood burning stove), and you’ve got a winning combination to melt even the most stubborn of hearts.
'Never go on trips with anyone you do not love' - Ernest Hemingway.
After a quiet month of r & r following Christmas, Cornwall begins to wake up around Valentines with its plethora of fabulous restaurants, cute boutique shops and tasty tea shops opening once again to visitors.
Because spring arrives earlier in the west, wild flowers are emerging too – hedge rows burst with the golden lusciousness of gorse, its heady vanilla-coconut floating on the sea salty air, whilst primroses, snowdrops and other wild flowers begin to emerge in woodland and along country paths. Daffodils grow in abundance here to be sold across the country – the yellow glowing fields can’t be missed along with the numerous buckets laden with bunches for sale on the side of the road. Birds and animals are beginning to feel spring-like too and the sun makes a more regular appearance, so all in all it’s a great location for a romantic getaway.
But what to do? There’s the Poldark effect of course. You can walk the coastal path from Botallack to Lelant which was often used as a backdrop during filming due to its incredible views and old ruined mines – you can easily imagine Ross cantering by. The Minack Theatre in Porthcurno is lovely for a look around, where many of Shakespeare’s romantic plays have taken place. If super-kitsch is more your thing, head to touristy Land’s End where you can get your picture taken at the famous signpost (for a price!). St Ives is lovely (and lively) with cobbled streets, stunning sandy beaches and great little shops. Or you can’t beat Tintagel – the romantic ruins swathed in Arthurian legends (and the backdrop to many, many proposals). Alternatively head to Camel Valley Vineyard for a wine tasting session – delish!
Talking of tipples, nothing beats a cosy inn or pub to cuddle up in, and Cornwall has plenty; from the historic Pandora Inn near Mylor to St Tudy Inn near Bodmin, you’ll not want for choice. If you want to wow your other half somewhere extra special (and maybe ask a certain question), Cornwall is home to top notch restaurants run by the likes of Nathan Outlaw, Paul Ainsworth and the ubiquitous Rick Stein as well as a host of others. Hot spots for top eateries are Padstow, Porthleven, Rock, Falmouth and St Ives.
