I’ve lived in Cornwall all my life, but I’d never truly experienced St. Ives in all its beauty. Even in November, with a chill in the air and darkness creeping in early, you feel so stunned by its charm. If you’re like us, totally mesmerised and feel completely at home by the sea, this is the perfect spot for you, too.
After a busy week on different work schedules, my partner Darren and I were so thrilled to be spending some quality time together at the gorgeous Shellseekers. The lights were all left on for us, and the cosiness inside was so enticing. As we unlocked the door, we could hear the sea dancing in the harbour just a few steps away from us. Knowing that we were so close to the sea felt truly comforting and added that extra special touch to the weekend. Inside, everything was perfect; the smell of fresh flowers in the air, not a cushion or knick-knack out of place. It was exactly as we pictured in our heads and met all of our expectations.
Upstairs on the top floor, it was like finding a whole new world. It just kept getting better. The elegant slipper bath and soft, white robes were totally calling my name. An array of Bramley bath products had been left for us to choose from; arguably making the best bubble bath combination. With a glass of gin and tonic to hand, it was the height of relaxation.
The fire in the wood burner was tempestuous, glowing endless shades of red through the glass. We popped on a Netflix movie and enjoyed a glass or two; cuddled up on the plush sofa and just so cosy. We didn’t care that the wind outside was howling, we felt like we were in our own little bubble. We loved the white shutters on the windows, and the subtle hints of the seaside included in the interiors. So simplistic and traditional yet bursting with pure luxury.
Saturday morning, we woke with the knowledge that the day was ours to explore the idyllic fishing town. We managed to lure ourselves out of the plush, king-size bed with a fantastically strong coffee from the Nespresso machine, and off we went for a stroll around St. Ives. Stepping out of the front door in the daylight, we caught a glimpse of the fishing boats bobbing on the water. So perfectly picturesque, even with greyer skies and a cold, ‘Jack Frost’ chill in the air – in fact, I think I like it better that way. Wrapped up in our coats and hats, we stood on the pier for a while, just watching the birds take wing across the water and the waves collide with the rocks.
We discovered some adorable shops, tucked around corners and down little lanes, full of quirky gifts and exquisite artwork. We were so pleased to find some really thoughtful Christmas gifts for our family and friends, completely unique to St. Ives or Cornwall. Our favourite of them all was Brocante, with a dazzling Christmas-themed window display and twinkling lights. We’re feeling festive!
It was lovely to retire back at Shellseekers on Saturday afternoon, resting our legs and warming our toes back to life by the wood burner. It’s fabulous in mid-November, so I can only imagine how sensational it would be, choosing Shellseekers to celebrate a special occasion or to enjoy some time together over the magical festive season.
We wandered through the town, in awe of all the beautiful lights along the harbour leading us on our way. As we strolled through the town, we heard music playing from inside a small and well lit-up doorway, and the scent of a feast drifting through the air – we just had to explore. Downstairs, we found The Cellar Bistro; a gloriously romantic, candle-lit restaurant. My partner Darren arguably had the best steak that he has ever eaten, with homemade chips and all the trimmings. The team were so friendly, and the atmosphere was just dreamy – this place is definitely worth a visit.
Sunday morning rolled in, and we shuffled downstairs in our dressing robes to make some breakfast. There is every little thing you could possibly need in the kitchen – we could even squeeze our own fresh orange juice to complement our bacon sandwiches! Everything feels so bright and roomy, with the exposed, white beams and all the soft furnishings bursting with colour.
The sun put his hat on for us and peeped through the clouds for a moment, so we grabbed the chance to explore a different side of St. Ives. Porthmeor beach is picture perfect; with a stretch of golden sand and crystal-clear water. We took a stroll together across the beach, watching intently as the surfers took full advantage of the swell. It’s fair to say that we ‘blew the cobwebs away’ and gave both our minds and souls the sea-therapy that we needed. Resting our pins at the lovely Porthmeor Beach Café, we relished in the idea of a hot chocolate and marshmallows to warm us up.
Sunday evening rolled in and we were getting ready to try out St. Ives’s famous Talay Thai restaurant. We had heard so many good things from our friends; and we definitely weren’t disappointed! Our family joined us at the restaurant and the atmosphere was sensational, with an open kitchen and super friendly team, and the food was nothing shy of heavenly.
Packing ourselves up to go home, we reflected on how much our trip to Shellseekers had gifted us over the past few days. We started our trip with busy minds and no knowledge of the St. Ives beauty that could be found just a short drive away from home. Just two days later, we had explored new beaches, experienced unfamiliar foods and recharged our batteries ready for the week ahead. This haven was the perfect break we needed, and we came home feeling totally contented.
