Stories of the Sea

Seaside scenes and getaway dreams at Gwella

Seaside scenes and getaway dreams at Gwella

I felt excitement all afternoon, as it was coming up to the start of my magical escape to the picturesque fishing village of Mousehole in Cornwall. On arrival, straight away we were delighted with how close the parking was to the front door of the beautiful Gwella – a real rarity in this quaint village!

We arrived at the check-in time of 5pm and headed straight to our personal terrace to enjoy the sunset, we were thrilled to discover the welcome pack left for us and enjoyed the complimentary prosecco with our dinner, whilst taking in the fresh sea air. I had one very excited 5-year-old boy who was completely overwhelmed at being so close to the sea! It was a magic experience to take in these Cornish views together.

This property welcomes up to 4 guests, there is the stunning master bedroom with a double bed and the second bedroom can be made as twin beds or a super king for your stay. We had it set as a super king, it was huge and so snug for one lucky little boy! Gwella is utterly charming, and the thoughtful little detail of fresh homemade muffins were a wonderful addition for the morning - we enjoyed these with jam and lashings of cream - absolutely scrumptious!

Of course, we made the most of the essential Nespresso machine, this was a massive hit with my husband who really appreciates a decent coffee in the morning. We sat with our fresh coffee and croissants looking out to sea, pure perfection! The view of the horizon from this retreat is truly transcendent. The sumptuous beds were ever so comfortable and everything we needed was at hand - fresh and clean.

Gwella is adorned with beautiful artwork, fantastic books and items to keep you intrigued and inspired. This retreat promises an amazing, nautical vibe that fits this destination to a tee. There is also a reading snug with a French day bed, my son called this the ‘binocular room’ as it had a great spot for looking out to sea with the telescope or binoculars available. This house was just perfect for a curious little boy, that is for sure!

As it was such a sunny, beautiful day, we decided to explore the gorgeous Mousehole. A short and stunning stroll takes you to the beach and the local shops, these are quirky and cute. We met locals who were so friendly a helpful and always smiling – we understood why living in such a place! We decided on the Rock Pool Café for lunch. This was lunch with a view, you can wave watch whilst tucking into crab sandwiches and heavenly cream cakes! After enjoying the rest of the afternoon at the beach collecting shells and sea glass, we wandered back to Gwella to freshen up.

Gwella has a fantastic double shower with plenty of hot water, so we were all feeling fresh and ready in no time, the bathroom is spacious and beautifully decorated. After we freshened up, to my son’s delight he came across the board game collection! We had to prize him away with the promise of a game of monopoly in front of the wood burner in the evening. We decided on The Old Coastguard for our dinner, again blissful view, there is an inside restaurant and a delightful beer garden overlooking the sea. Breath-taking views! The food was divine, I would highly recommend the Monkfish. Back at Gwella (after Monopoly) we tucked up our son and relished relaxing in the living room beside the wood burner with a glass of merlot, we felt restored after all the soothing sea air! Vitamin Sea was much needed, we slept so well!

We enjoyed another beautiful day in Mousehole, it was so calm and sleepy, we just enjoyed all being together in the dreamy, picturesque village. For our final night, we decided to cook dinner together and with all the great equipment available it was a home away from home, as we did not want for anything!

Savouring our time on the sea terrace available for us, my little boy enjoyed looking out to see with his binoculars again - searching for pirates and sharks, of course!

We really didn’t want to leave Gwella, we felt so relaxed here and wish we could have stayed longer! Being this close to the sea does something to your soul, we recommend staying here if you have the opportunity! We said so long to Gwella, but have promised my son we would return for some real Cornish magic in the dreamy Mousehole very soon...
