Sat between the River Wye, Herefordshire, the River Severn and Gloucester, the Forest of Dean is a sprawling mass of ancient oaks, pine, spruce, chestnut and all manner of shrubs and plants. Rich with different animal species, it was once used for royal hunting before 1066. These days, it attracts countless visitors each year, although for quite different reasons.
Whether you are an admirer of nature, sports-enthusiast or are simply looking for somewhere beautiful to escape for a while, the Forest of Dean has it all. Overflowing with life and home to a network of trails, footpaths and bridle paths, you can waste no time in uncovering and rediscovering this magical forest.
To really get to know the area and start on the right foot, stop by one of the forest’s visitor centres. Each with a slightly different focus, the centres will guide you along the right path and make sure your visit is the best it can be. For family adventures, head to Beechenhurst in the heart of the forest and explore the sculpture trail, play area, cafe, climbing tower and Go Ape facilities. To pick up the bike trails, your best bet is Cannop Cycle Centre, whereas Mallard Pike’s Lake is an excellent spot to test your Segway skills.
If walking is your thing, you are certainly in for a treat. Catering for all ages and abilities, the forest has a number of routes under its leafy canopy. Get your heart racing with miles to explore, or relax into a more leisurely pace, enjoying the pretty wildflowers that pepper the banks and birds that flit through the trees. If you are lucky, you may even spy some of the resident deer who call the forest home, including fallow, roe and muntjac.
A real gem for all generations, the Forest of Dean brings out the inner child in everyone. Whether you are hiking, climbing, canoeing or picnicking, the whole family can have fun together and create memories to last a lifetime. And, when you’re ready for refuelling, there are also a number of restaurants, pubs and cafes nearby serving up hearty fodder for tired adventurers.
