Set on the glittering edges of the River Dart, the 15th-century Dartmouth Castle is a beloved sight. Originally constructed during the reign of King Richard II, it was one of the first artillery fortresses of its kind in the UK and was built to defend the area’s towns and waterways from invasion. Today, this lovingly preserved castle still takes pride of place at the mouth of the Dart and is an intriguing place to visit. Twinning with Dartmouth Castle is nearby Kingswear Castle, which can be viewed from the coast or aboard the Dartmouth to Kingswear ferry. Completed in the early 1500s, it provided a defensive ally of Dartmouth Castle to stand watch over the river and guard the county’s flourishing trading ports and transport hubs.

Castle Drogo

One of the youngest castles in Devon, Castle Drogo was designed and built by the renowned English architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and entrepreneur Julius Drewe in the 20th century. Considered to be the last castle built in England, its architecture was inspired by the striking tors of Dartmoor and embodies a modern interpretation of Medieval mastery. Perched above the wizened woodlands of the Teign Gorge, it is just perfect for those seeking scintillating discovery in its indoor exhibitions, as well as alfresco reveries amongst its ancient woodland and manicured estate. Originally built between 1068 and 1086, this motte and bailey castle was later developed in the 1300s by Hugh Courtenay to become a palatial residence. A beloved home until it was later abandoned during the reign of King Henry VIII, this castle began to crumble with the ripples of time, later becoming the thought-provoking muse of Romantic painters, such as JMW Turner. Still standing high on its hilltop perch, Okehampton Castle invites visitors to explore vestiges of the past and relish the breath-taking valley views that unfurl below.
