After a busy week at work, we couldn’t wait to switch off for a few days and head to the quaint, creekside Blythe Cottage - a cosy, dog-friendly retreat for two in the quiet village of Malpas, near Truro.

By the time we arrived on Friday evening, the night had already settled in. The drive along the Truro River was simply beautiful, with the moonlight reflecting on the water as we followed the winding road into the village. It was so peaceful and still, which made us wonder about the views we would be greeted with in daylight.

Parking was easy to find along the terrace, and with bags in hand, we made our way up the steps to the stone, Grade II listed cottage. Upon opening the door, we instantly felt a warm welcome with the underfloor heating warming our toes and the paws of my dog, Bunnie. Promising country rustic interiors with quintessential coastal touches, this dreamy cottage is perfect for those seeking a romantic escape from the everyday. Babies up to twelve months are also most welcome.

The welcome hamper caught our eye, and we were excited to see that it had been filled with a variety of local treats to start our weekend away. As the evening had already crept in, we began to craft dinner in the kitchen, which had everything needed to cook up a delicious meal. Bunnie kept a watchful eye over what I was cooking up, the cutest sous-chef!

After a few card games, we couldn’t wait to get up to bed and fall asleep in the peaceful comfort of the sumptuous king-sized bed – not before a bubble-topped soak in the bathtub, complete with the lovely addition of Chapter Organics self-care essentials.

The next morning, we woke to the wonderful river views, perching in the window to watch the gentle sway of the water. After breakfast, we wandered along the woodland path beside the creek, which was perfect for Bunnie’s morning walk. We then popped into The Heron Inn for a coffee, which is just a short stroll from the cottage – a chance to take in a slightly different, yet equally beautiful view of the water.

In the afternoon, we decided to explore Truro, Cornwall’s city, which is just a short drive away from Blythe Cottage. We had a gentle walk around the Saturday market, which hosted a wide variety of local produce. We then took in the sights of Truro Cathedral and the nearby park before stopping at The Pet Centre, a family-run shop where we let Bunnie pick herself a natural treat for the afternoon.

Back at the cottage, we got comfy in the characterful sitting room with a cup of tea and just enjoyed the view as the light faded over the river, a simple pleasure but so relaxing.

Sunday morning started with grey skies and light drizzle, but even then, the scenery didn’t disappoint us. We treated ourselves to breakfast in bed as we couldn’t bear to leave our cosy room! Eventually, we decided to take the short drive to Trelissick Garden, a National Trust house and gardens, where we wandered through the parkland and along the footpaths. It is truly a beautiful spot, especially for dogs who have over 300 acres of countryside to explore. Afterwards, we excitedly made our way back to Malpas as we had booked a table at The Heron Inn for a roast, which was just what we needed after a rainy stroll.

That evening, we finally took the chance to light the log burner, set in the darling inglenook fireplace. This was a simple task, as it had been prepared for us in advance. With the fire softly crackling and Bunnie fast asleep, we watched a film on the Smart TV and embraced the cosiness – just the perfect end to our weekend away.
