A waterside haven gilded with draping willows and rolling hills, Henley-on-Thames is the very picture of natural beauty. The history of this market town is told through the tapestry of architecture that weaves through the buildings and surrounding scenery. The 18th-century bridge is an honoured symbol of commerce and community, connecting the town with Mill End and marking Henley as a place to pause and marvel at skilled masonry. Away from the water’s edge, the town hall has looked over the square with a russet gaze since the beginning of the 19th century, with two stones on either side of the doorway commemorating the hall’s important use by the Red Cross during the Second World War. And for those who seek a spiritual sanctuary, St Mary’s Church has been welcoming visitors since the 13th century, and offers a serene spot to appreciate the vaulted designs and Victorian influences.
