Residing on the south coast in Ballasalla, the Isle of Man Airport (Ronaldsway Airport) welcomes all flights to the island.

Just a whisper from Castletown and 9 miles from the capital, Douglas, it is perfectly placed for uncovering the island. Within the airport itself are a café, shops, and comfort facilities, while a regular flight schedule promises both national and international travel. The information desk is open from 5.30am until the departure of the last flight of the day.

Ferries to the Isle of Man

Set sail over the sapphire waters of the Irish Sea for a memorable way to arrive on the Isle of Man. Operated by The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, an array of ferries departs from ports across the UK and Northern Ireland, transporting foot passengers, cyclists, and motorists to the shores of Douglas and the island’s bewitching realms.

With three ferries amongst its fleets, each one promises an enjoyable crossing with a wealth of bespoke comforts and attractions on board. Check-in generally opens around 2 hours 30 minutes prior to departure, while each port is served by its own passenger terminal and amenities.  

Heysham, England

Heysham Port in Lancashire is served by The MV Manxman. Launched in 2023 after the company’s flagship TSS Manxman, this state-of-the-art ferry offers a luxurious crossing experience with premium lounges and seating areas, cafés, a bar, duty-free shopping, pet lounges, children’s play areas, outdoor decks, and more. Private cabins are also available for booking, adding an exclusive touch to crossings. Ferries depart from Heysham to Douglas throughout the year, with up to 12 crossings per week, while each passage takes around 3 hours 45 minutes.

Liverpool, England

Step aboard the Manannan in Liverpool and begin your island adventures. Departing from the Isle of Man Ferry Terminal in Liverpool, the sleek and streamlined Manannan promises a fast, efficient crossing to Douglas in just 2 hours and 45 minutes. Operating throughout the year, regular crossings take place each week from April to October, while weekend crossings take place in winter. Onboard, eateries, shops, cinema lounges, and children’s play areas propose comfort and entertainment for all generations. Pets are welcome to travel inside vehicles on the Manannan.

Ben-my-Chree

Larne, Northern Ireland

Taking over from Belfast Port in April 2026, Larne Ferry Port hosts a year-round sailing calendar. Sailing the Irish Sea to reach Douglas, crossings take around 4 hours and 30 minutes and are alternated by The Manxman, Manannan, and Ben-my-Chree ferries. Welcoming 630 passengers, the Ben-my-Chree ferry features a plethora of places to relax and dine on board, as well as dedicated pet lounges for those travelling with a canine companion. Settle into a comfortable seat with a book in hand, or gaze at the blue vistas beyond the window.

Dublin, Ireland

For spring and summer sojourns to the Isle of Man, Dublin Port hosts seasonal ferry crossings to Douglas. Taking just under 3 hours, sailings are provided by either the Ben-my-Chree or the Manannan. Both ferries boast a variety of onboard amenities, with comfortable seating and dining areas, premium lounges, children’s play areas, and shops. The Ben-my-Chree also enjoys pet-friendly lounges, so all the family can travel together. Seek refreshments from the onboard cafés and relax into the journey as you daydream of island realms.

What Documents Do I Need When Visiting the Isle of Man?

If you’re entering the Isle of Man from the UK or Ireland, you don’t legally need a passport to arrive. However, most airlines do require a valid passport or driving license for boarding, so travelling with a legal form of photo identification is strongly advised. Should you plan to arrive by ferry, you don’t legally require a passport, although it is always best to carry a form of legal photo identification that matches your booking details. If you are travelling from outside the UK and Ireland, then you will need a valid passport and relevant documentation.

Do I Need Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

From 23rd April 2026, the Isle of Man launched the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme. This means that if you are a non-visa national travelling from outside of the UK and Ireland, you will need a travel permit before you can enter the Isle of Man and begin your dreamy island retreat. This is not required by UK or Ireland nationals.

Is it Easy to Travel by Car?

Reaching the Isle of Man by car is extremely straightforward thanks to the regular ferries that depart from various ports in the UK and Ireland. Ferry tickets are booked through The Isle of Man Steam Packet Ferry Company and you must enter your vehicle details at the time of booking, including vehicle registration and type. Alternatively, car hire is readily available on the island, with hubs at both The Isle of Man Airport and Douglas Sea Terminal Office.

What Currency Can I Use on the Isle of Man?

Can I Take my Bike?

Exploring on two wheels is a timeless pastime that promises a wonderfully immersive way to uncover the Isle of Man’s scenic highlights and hidden gems. If you are travelling by ferry, bikes can be stowed within vehicles for no additional charge; however, bikes on racks form part of vehicle measurements and need to be declared at the time of booking. Many airlines allow the carriage of bikes for an additional fee within the hold, although this should be confirmed individually.
