Open the gate, walk up the steps and through the door and you'll find yourself in a lovely cottage dating back to 1750 with whitewashed walls, huge ancient fireplaces and decorated in calming, soft colours as befits a home stay such as this. A combination of soft wooden and stone flooring, wooden furniture, wrought iron beds and pretty linens really adds to the country-cottage feel, whilst the stone walled cottage garden and view of the rolling hills beyond will really make you feel you've found your little piece of countryside heaven.
Living and eating
The calming open living space is bedecked with sofas in the lightest shades of grey, positioned to make the most of the floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over the garden and trees. The light wooden flooring, white walls and fabulous artwork makes this a beautifully relaxed space - ideal for catching up over a bottle or two of something delicious or snuggling up for a film night on the 50 inch 4K television.
Towards the back of the room lies the kitchen - a lovely country kitchen with wooden worktops, dove-grey wall tiles, whitewashed exposed walls, stone flooring and a pretty little window with wooden shutters. The heart of the kitchen is the large wood burning stove, set into the huge original stone fireplace. Fully equipped with everything you might need to rustle up a feast or two, there's also a Smeg kettle and toaster plus the all-important Nespresso coffee machine.
A small breakfast bar is perfect for a bite to eat, whilst the main dining room is separate with a vintage dining table and seating for six.
Sleeping
There are three gorgeous bedrooms; a king size bedroom downstairs with a further king and a twin upstairs. The pretty downstairs bedroom is en suite and has a lovely bed-knobs-and-broomsticks bed, floor to ceiling window overlooking the garden and skylight above. The further king upstairs has an original stone fireplace, gorgeous wooden flooring and a sumptuous bed for long lie-ins. The twin bedroom has a pair of cute cream wrought iron beds. All bedrooms come with luxurious linens and warm throws for cooler nights.
Bathing
The en suite to the downstairs bedroom has a walk-in shower whilst the family bathroom upstairs has a bath with shower overhead - perfect for long evening soaks or a pick-me-up shower in the morning.
Outside space
The lovely cottage garden is ringed with mature trees, whilst the old stone walled garden next to the bench gives the feeling of a secret garden, nicely tucked away from the world outside. You will find seating for six for a spot of alfresco dining when you want to soak up the sun!

In the Area
Cheyne Cottage is located in a gorgeous Devon country village boasting two village pubs and within an area where there is plenty to do right on your doorstep. Just up the road is the lovely town of Totnes with its alternative vibe, independent shops and sense of real history (it boasts more listed buildings than any other town in Britain). Devon's largest Good Food market takes place on the third Sunday of every month with over 50 stalls whilst a regular market occurs every Friday and Saturday. It's also lovely to take a boat trip on the River Dart from here.
Take a trip on the South Devon Railway for an alternative way to see the countryside. Running between Totnes and Buckfastleigh, it's a glorious ride on a steam train of just over seven miles with plenty to see either end such as Buckfast Abbey.
If you enjoy walking, Dartmoor is just a short drive away and offers miles of paths, tracks and bridleways for you to explore.
Drive to the coast to enjoy the beautiful beaches of the South Hams and also Torbay, all within a 30 - 40 minute drive.
For foodies, head to Ben's Farm Shop (formally Riverford Farm Shop) in the nearby village of Staverton to pick up lots of organic and locally-grown goodies to take back to your retreat.
