As the former gatehouse to Eden Hall Mansion, Khari sits beside grand pillars marking the entrance to Edenhall Estate. The architecturally magnificent building was designed by Sir Robert Smirke, who was also responsible for designing the iconic Royal opera house and the British museum.

The owner has lovingly restored this historical abode with a beautiful mix of reclaimed fixtures and original fittings to create a soothing escape from everyday life. This honey-hued home offers an abundance of space for couples looking to retreat to the Lakes, with three marvelous sitting rooms, a romantic bedroom, and a charming garden, complete with a bubbling wood-fired hot tub for magical moments alfresco. Explore your splendid surroundings, taking in the beauty of the Cumbrian countryside and reconnect with nature.

Living

With three beautiful lounge areas, there's ample space to relax and unwind after days spent exploring the Lake District. The formal sitting room, with vibrant William Morris Bellflowers wallpaper and a plush velvet sofa in deep purple is a soothing space to enjoy calming retreat moments. Light the fire and embrace your tranquil surroundings, curling up with a gripping page turner. Wild deer can often be spotted grazing from the grand lounge windows, a magical sight to behold in such an idyllic setting.

Retreat to the relaxed sitting room for movie nights, with a Smart TV and a soft grey corner sofa, dressed in neutral cushions and throws, just made for such cosy moments. You'll also find a beautiful feature marble fireplace and lamps to set the mood.

A snug study, in rich earthy tones, offers the perfect space for those looking to catch up on an email or two, with a Marshall radio to soundtrack your soothing holiday playlist. You'll also find a selection of board games and books in the small library of popular literary tales.

Eating

The modern-rustic kitchen, brimming with quirky features has everything you should need during your staycation, including an oven, hob, a washing machine, dishwasher, and the essential Nespresso coffee machine for wake-me-up moments. You'll also find a rustic dining table set within the kitchen.

Through the kitchen door, you'll find a cosy, enclosed courtyard garden with a table and chairs and twinkling fairy lights, the perfect spot for indulgent brunches - or perhaps a cocktail under the stars beside the warmth of the chiminea.

Sleeping

Seek blissful slumbers and countryside scenes in the romantic master bedroom, where dark oak flooring and neutral tones promise a restful night. You'll find a king-sized bed, beautifully topped with plump cushions and cosy bedding, along with an antique olive-toned chest of drawers and two bedside tables.

Bathing

With rustic beams, jute accessories and marbled tiling, the stylish bathroom is a sanctuary for those looking to unwind. You'll find a jet-black rolltop bathtub just made for candlelit soaks, along with a sleek freestanding shower.

Outside space

Step outside to find the stunning and spacious lawned garden. You'll find a wooden bench for relaxed lunches, whilst the teak garden table and chairs provide an enchanting setting for alfresco evening dining. Perfectly secluded and tucked amongst the trees, you will find the wood-fired hot tub, a romantic spot for spellbinding nights spent under starry skies. Whether you're dreaming of cloud watching on quilted picnic blankets on balmy sun-soaked days or indulging in moments of quietude whilst hoping for a glimpse of wild deer grazing in the trees beyond, this heavenly space is a nature lover's dream.

We know how gorgeous our retreats are, but don’t just take our word for it – here’s what previous guests say about Khari:

This retreat is a real treat to stay in. The location is excellent in a beautiful area which is lovely and peaceful with lovely walks but also very handy for touring the Lake District. The cottage is beautiful, with unique and stylish decor. Welcomed with a lovely hamper which started our stay with off nicely. There was a cottage is very clean and good information to helped with our stay. I would highly recommend a stay here.

Wonderful stay and a great property! Felt very comfortable celebrating our anniversary! Would recommend. We will be booking again in the future!

Garden was bigger than anticipated, secret garden enclosure, welcome pack and BBQ were an amazing treats. We loved it so much that we could see ourselves living here! Thank you.

A wonderful place to escape the world

Welcome hamper with local food, very nice. All rooms quiet and cozy. Really nice bathroom with large shower. Although we had some rain, we enjoyed our stay in our „castle“.

Stunning little lodge which is beautifully decorated and has lots of cosy rooms to snuggle up to read or watch a movie, work or admire the passing deer from. The perfect escape.

A really beautiful setting inside a cosy grade 2 listed former gatehouse. Each room has been restored to a very high standard, plenty of room inside and cosy on those cold nights with a large log fire as you listen to the owls outside!

It is hard not to like Khari, we had a lovely weeks stay over Christmas, very comfortable, the bed is wonderful and the lodge is much larger in person than the photos suggest! Great location, you can’t hear the road at all and the hot tub is brilliant bonus! Took about 6 hours to heat initially, but stayed warmed the entire week with occasional log top ups and the WiFi is dreadful, so bring a book!

The estate made us feel very welcome and we’re always on hand to provide assistance if needed.

Amazing property, well located for driving to nearby towns, beautiful inside!. Wonderful and cosy stay, perfect retreat for exploring the Lake District!

Lovely setting, staff are very helpful

Khari was quirky and full of character. Beautifully located with easy access to wonderful walks and to the lakes.

We fell in love with the appearance and character of the gate house and there was enough space for the two of us and the dog to enjoy our break in the Lakes despite the weather. The location was good, rural but close enough to the town, and about half hour from Ullswater and Derwentwater to enjoy the lake district. We managed to get a last minute cancellation for dinner at The Dog and Gun Inn in Skelton on recommendation from your welcome guide/ handbook and it was a lovely end to our holiday so thank you! Although the lodge was dog friendly, the garden was open to the road and The Avenue which guests could not use. We kept our young dog on a lead while in the garden to ensure that he was safe and did not wander off.

Stunning property and amazing hot tub! The garden was perfect for our two dogs. Lovely and relaxing… great location to get to other places too.

Contact was great when needed too. We called for a cot & a high chair and it was dropped off 20 mins later.

Khari is a quirky, cosy place to to stay. Great for a romantic weekend. We really enjoyed staying here.

A stunning historic building in a quiet corner of the Eden Valley offering privacy and tranquility. Plentiful supply of logs and a lovely welcome hamper which was gratefully appreciated after a long journey!

A warm, cosy retreat in a fabulous location, right on the door step of all that the Lake District has to offer.

The cottage was in a superb setting, very peaceful, comfortable and thoughtfully put together, we would love to stay again and would highly recommend to anyone!
