Out & About

A hidden and historic gem nestled within a sleepy cove on the Roseland Peninsula, Portloe promises coastal charm at every turn. Once a bustling pilchard fishing port, today, mainly crab and lobster are brought into Portloe, with only three boats working from the cove.

A south Cornish jewel, uncover postcard-pretty cottages dotted throughout this quaint village. Whether you seek solo escapism with your canine companion, a romantic salt-kissed rendezvous or an unforgettable family holiday, you are sure to find your very own secluded sanctuary by the sea.

The only local pub in Portloe is the Ship Inn. Originally built in the 17th Century as a fisherman’s cottage, this characterful inn is full of romance. Five minutes from the sea and with a pretty garden overlooking the wooded valley and stream, it is the perfect place for a lazy lunch.

For a nice dinner, afternoon tea or a special occasion, head to the Lugger Hotel and book a table in their two AA Rosette awarded restaurant. For further choices head to St Mawes’ world-famous boutique Tresanton Hotel, perfect for dinner with a panoramic view on their terrace, or try the Quarterdeck Restaurant at Veryan’s Nare Hotel for a delectable afternoon tea experience.

If you would like to bundle up some goodies to take back to your Boutique Retreat in Portloe or fill your hamper for a picnic overlooking the sea, make sue you stop off at the Da Bara Bakery and Café and Curgurrel Farm Shop where all manner of heavenly treats and titbits await.

For a night of sipping decadent potables, the Idle Rocks in St Mawes has some of the best cocktails going. Perched above the water, it sets the scene perfectly for a night of conversation and relaxation as exquisite explosions of taste burst across your tongue. Meanwhile in Veryan, the 16th Century Melinsey Mill offers an enchanted escape; follow the breadcrumb trail to the Hansel and Gretel-esque café and be met with an array of drinks, served alongside irresistible homemade cakes and scones.

That said, Portloe is so pretty that we would recommend simply staying put in your ultra cosy accommodation. Chilling out in your Boutique Retreat, listening to the whisper of the waves and catching up on quality time in front of the wood burner accompanied by a few bottles of something chilled: this is what makes staying in a luxury cottage in Portloe such a magical experience.

Staying in a luxury cottage in Portloe is the perfect opportunity to visit Cornwall; only 16 miles away is the world-famous Eden Project and it’s only a short distance from Veryan, Truro, Mevagissey, Fowey and St Mawes. Catch the ferry from St Mawes and spend the day in Falmouth, exploring the shops, the beaches and Pendennis Castle. That is if you can tear yourself away from the stunning surroundings of Portloe in the first place.

Go for countryside walks, whether a short amble to climb up and get a better view of the village or stroll the 4 miles to Carne Beach. Visit the nearby Lost Gardens of Heligan, Trelissick and Caerhays Castle for the ultimate garden escapes. Heligan is simply beautiful and it is dog friendly as well. If it all sounds too physical and you don’t fancy cliff hikes or a day of botanical discovery then why not stay put? Curl up in your luxurious rural retreat, overlook the breath-taking scenery and relax...
