Out & About

Situated in North Cornwall, Portreath sits betwixt rolling countryside, tangled woodland and rugged coastline softened with powder-fine sandy beaches. Both a summer haven and impressive winter destination, it boasts year-round appeal whether you are looking forward to a spontaneous luxury break or much-anticipated fortnight away. Consistent in its appeal, Portreath has plenty to offer visitors, including lots of places to eat. Start mornings with wedges of fresh bread from the local bakery before heading out to breathe in the revitalising scent of sea air. Whether you want to use your sumptuous cottage as a base for flitting from sea to sofa or would like to venture further afield, you will be spoilt for choice. In lush contrast to Portreath’s shore, Tehidy Country Park is just over a mile away and home to 250 acres of woodland dotted with lakes. Explore beneath its green canopies or stick to the beach for water-based fun. A haven for surfers, Portreath’s waterfront (once a busy port for importing coal and exporting copper) attracts thrill-seekers with its “vortex” surf break.

Recharge with a cup of tea at Olde Penny's Tea Room; quaint and homely, the cosy atmosphere and tantalising selection of homemade cakes to accompany your tea will be hard to resist. Jay Bird Deli is a vibrant spot within the village to enjoy flavoursome breakfasts, lunches and tasty treats to accompany artisan roasted blends. To reward your efforts after a clifftop walk or to simply embrace the holiday spirit, Portreath is also lucky enough to benefit from three pubs. Choose from the Portreath Arms, the Basset Arms or the Altantic for somewhere welcoming to enjoy a local brew or lime-topped G&T. If you get hungry, each of these pubs offers food menus too during select hours.

Famed for its beach and excellent surfing, Portreath is a salty idyll. Plonk yourself on the sand with a good read and let yourself relax or play in the surf and feel the cathartic rinse of seawater wash your worries away. If you have always fancied giving surfing a go, HQ Surf School is based in Portreath and provides tuition for surfers of all ages and abilities.

If you have your four-legged friends with you, Portreath beach has a seasonal dog ban, but fear not - there are year-round dog-friendly options nearby. 1.5 and 2 miles away respectively, Bassetts Cove and Greenbank Cove welcome dogs 365 days of the year, although it is probably worth noting these are both nudist beaches!

If you fancy stretching your legs over a longer walk, the South West Coast Path will lead you north to Porthtowan (8 miles there and back), another popular surfing spot with a cool beach bar. You can also pick up the Tramway Coast to Coast trail, which runs from Portreath to Devoran, before returning to put your feet up in your luxury bolthole.
