Boutique Cottages in Stow-on-the-Wold

With mellow Cotswold stone cottages, a pretty market square and a church that inspired J R R Tolkien, it’s no wonder that this lovely town is a jewel in the Cotswolds’ crown. With a history dating back to the Iron Age due to it being at the junction of six roads making it a natural meeting place, the town continued to grow with its impressive market square being formed in medieval times, when Stow was home to the Cotswolds’ biggest sheep market. Today, its narrow alleyways are remnants of that time, when they were used to control and count sheep. The town is also home to the (reputedly) oldest inn in England – the Royalist – said to date back to 947AD, complete with medieval fireplace and resident ghosts. Today, the town has a great selection of shops, inns, chic bistros and tea shops to tempt you, such as Lucy’s, a family run tearoom, and The Old Butchers, an award-winning restaurant. It’s also an easy drive from here to visit such attractions as Batsford Arboretum, Broadway Tower, the Cotswold Farm Park and Stanway House and Gardens.
