A thriving town with a deep-rooted history, there is much to see and do in Burton. Overlooked by a 16th century dovecote perched high on Lusty Hill and traced by the River Bruce, it is very much a haven for tranquillity seekers looking to dip in and out of country life. Cited as “Briuuetone” (referring to the river) in the Domesday Book, many happy summer days can be spent picnicking on the banks, hopping across the steppingstones when the water is low. Slightly further afield, you can climb to the top of King Alfred's Tower, a 160ft high folly built in 1772.
In the town itself, wander past the high street’s 17th century Sexey’s Hospital alms-houses and browse the eclectic array of shops and boutiques. Pick up a few gifts to take home with you, and when you are ready for another dose of country air, make tracks to nearby Stourhead, a unique Palladian mansion home to world-famous landscape gardens, a mirror-like lake, classical temples and more. Finally, your holiday in Bruton wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the Hauser & Wirth gallery, part of international network celebrating art, education, conservation and sustainability.
