Out & About

Shrouded in history, traces of Lostwithiel’s rich heritage are etched into every nook and cranny. Cornwall’s capital over 700 years ago, this ancient stannary town has roots stretching all the way back to the 12th Century and proudly bears its past on its sleeves, playing host to some of Cornwall’s most fascinating historical sites. Whether you are planning a romantic short break or much anticipated week or two away, Lostwithiel is the perfect base for discovering the area’s secrets. From the luscious web of Cardinham Woods to the hidden beaches and coves to the town’s cobbled boutique-lined streets, there is truly something for everyone. Wake up to the sumptuous embrace of silky sheets in your Boutique Retreat and spend your days exploring to your heart’s content. As well as the wooded valleys and historical landmarks, the area also boasts some of the country’s most popular attractions, including the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan.

Somewhat of a foodie hotspot, you’ll be pleased to know there are lots of excellent eateries only a stone’s throw from our luxury cottages in Lostwithiel. Lending a great sense of occasion to meals out, Asquiths sits in the heart of Lostwithiel and complements modern British food with an elegant setting, perfect for romantic dinner dates. A little further away, the New Inn in Par is an excellent gastropub. Indulge in an evening out on the town, or if you’d rather stay snuggled up in your Boutique Retreat, gather up some goodies from Bellamama Deli and Nelly’s, where local cheeses, charcuterie olives and mouth-watering antipasta dishes are but some of the things to look forward to.

If you can’t resist cuddling up in a cosy pub corner, you will be spoilt for choice with characterful places to go in Lostwithiel. Choose from the Royal Oak Inn, the Globe Inn and the Earl of Chatham; each located in the town itself, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the picturesque streets before bagging yourself a seat by the bar or tucked away in a romantic nook to chat the evening away, sipping on your beverage of choice.

Ensuring you are never far from a morning coffee, reviving cup of tea or creamy hot chocolate, there are also a number of delightful cafés and tearooms for you to choose from. Wander along to Q. Street Café, a quirky independent coffee shop, for specialty coffee with wedges of home-made cakes, or try out the Duchy Coffee Shop or Duchy of Cornwall Nursery for hot drinks and sweet treats.

Derived from the Cornish translation of “the place at the end of the woodland”, Lostwithiel is buried away in a lush wooded valley at the head of the River Fowey. Whether you are visiting for your first, fifth or fifteenth time, you should put time aside for exploring the beautiful surrounds, including paying a visit to the town’s picturesque Tudor bridge and strolling through the nearby Cardinham Woods. Cloaked in emerald, jade and chartreuse tones, Cardinham Woods are a true playground for two and four-legged visitors looking to spend time within its tranquil embrace.

Fully dosed up on holiday vibes, your next port of call should be the famous Restormel Castle, a 13th Century circular keep stood atop an earlier Norman mound. Twice visited by the Black Prince, the dog-friendly castle boasts excellent views and makes for a wonderful picnic spot. Further afield you can also visit the iconic Eden Project, the National Trusts’ gorgeous Lanhydrock and the mysterious Bodmin Jail, not to mention the coastal towns of Fowey, Polperrro and Charlestown.
