Out & About

A gateway to the incredible Dartmoor National Park and the Tamar Valley AONB, the ancient stannary and market town of Tavistock is the ultimate Devon holiday destination, both in the shimmering height of summer and frost-kissed depths of winter. Straddling the picturesque River Tavy, you can appreciate the area’s full splendour and be treated to an array of shops, galleries and restaurants whilst still being a stone’s throw from luscious, unhampered countryside.

Famous for being the birthplace of Sir Francis Drake, the town gains affection from all who visit and often becomes a year-round retreat for those wishing to escape the humdrum of city life. Browse our selection of luxury self-catering cottages in and near Tavistock and look forward to an experience filled with Michelin-standard food, invigorating hours in the revitalising West Devon country air and a sumptuous retreat to come home to at the end of each day exploring.

Emerging from your five-star boutique accommodation in Tavistock each morning, you will be utterly spoiled for choice with the number of superb cafés and tearooms. Tempting you in with open doors wafting out tantalising smells of full English breakfasts, freshly baked bread and home-made pastries, you won’t have to go far before you find somewhere to your liking.

For lunch, the Cornish Arms is Tavistock’s family gastropub and a real winner. A highly popular choice, the pub serves up delectable dishes including scallops, Cornish stone bass, venison and sirloin steak. It’s not hard to see why this pub has earned so many awards over the years!

Elsewhere, the East Gate Café & Brasserie is a real gem and has fantastic views over the River Tay. Particularly lovely in summer when their terrace comes into its own, you can enjoy a varied menu and friendly service. Another choice for dinner, the nearby Peter Tavy Inn is a charming 15th century pub, renowned for its home-cooked food and well-kept real ales.

When the sun is beaming down through fluffy clouds, the best place to be is in one of Devon’s many pub gardens, and the Elephant’s Nest is no exception. Not to put the views of outstanding natural beauty to waste, the dog-friendly Elephant’s Nest’s green space overlooks Dartmoor and their menu of traditional ales and vast selection of wines certainly give a fine taste to proceedings, and as the pachyderm name suggests; you won’t forget the time you spend here.

The number of traditional pubs in Tavistock is remarkable, and wherever you are, we’re sure that you won’t be far away from a boutique Devonian ale or cider – especially handy when the weather clouds over. Both the Cornish Arms and the Tavistock Inn provide welcome reprieve from wintery eves and charming settings for a chat over a drink (or two…). When the morning rolls around, you can’t beat a pick-me-up coffee or tea from Café Liaison or the Kitchen.

During your stay in a boutique cottage, dust off your clubs (or hire a set!) and visit Tavistock Golf Club or Yelverton Golf Club and tee off in panoramic landscapes of the surrounding moors. Established in 1890, Tavistock’s golf course boasts the highest standards and provides a challenging test to golfers of all abilities.

Another time, make sure you pop over to Tavistock’s Farmer’s Market, a veritable a treasure trove of fresh, local food, drink and plants. Held twice a month, the market boasts a strong heritage and is a great place to peruse the fruits of the earth and diamonds of labour from those who work all year round to create authentic, boutique Westcountry produce.

Stretch your legs before you had back to your luxury Tavistock cottage with a waterside stroll along the town’s canal, a peaceful walk on mostly flat terrain. Take some bread along for the ducks or grab your camera and unleash your inner-photographer. Finally, a trip to Merrivale Monuments is definitely recommended; the remains of a Bronze Age settlement and a complex of ritual sites.
