Out & About

A place shrouded in mystery and legend, Tintagel in North Cornwall will capture your mind and steal your heart. From the awe-inspiring Tintagel Castle (the birthplace of Arthurian legend) to the yawning depths of Merlin’s Cave to the enchanted realms of St Nectan’s Glen, you are invited to explore this magical place and lose yourself within its fairy-tale charm.

Shirk responsibility and adopt a new kind of rhythm; whether you are savouring every minute of a short break or well-deserved fortnighter there will be plenty to keep you captivated. Choose from our luxury range of 5-star self-catering cottages in Tintagel and spend your days exploring the ‘Village on the Mountain’, discovering all about the local folklore and frequenting your new favourite local, all before returning to relax in your own private retreat.

The views from this stunning corner of Cornwall are without a doubt incredible, but the food is a close second! A hearty meal is needed for anyone who has taken to the Glebe Cliff walk or visited Merlin’s Cave; fortunately, Tintagel benefits from a liberal sprinkling of excellent restaurants, cafés and delis for you to choose from, including the Cornish Bakery and Charlie’s Deli.

If you can’t resist a beautiful backdrop, the Castle View Café and Tintagel Castle Beach Café should certainly pique your interest. Both situated in envy-inducing locations, you can munch on some tummy-filling goodies, sup a hot drink and bask in the glorious surrounds; a million miles from the responsibilities of every-day life.

A grand affair, Irina's Restaurant in Camelot Castle offers a slightly more formal dining experience, while King Arthur's Bistro and Primrose Cottage Café are both popular for their quaint, welcoming vibes. Round off your meal with a wedge of dribble-worthy fudge from Roly’s Fudge Pantry or packet of sweeties from Tintagel’s Artisan Confections – the perfect way to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Graced with gorgeous old pubs peppered with cosy corners and characterful bars where you can chatter the night away, Tintagel’s bar scene is just as golden as its dining. Sit back at the King’s Arms Inn with a drink and watch the world go by; a dog-friendly pub, you can use it for refreshment post North-Atlantic adventures or simply set up camp for the afternoon.

For beautiful sprawling gardens in which to sup fruit-topped Pimms in summer, make way to the centrally located Cornishman Inn, a proper traditional Cornish Inn near to Tintagel’s main attractions. Or, for somewhere truly atmospheric to spend a wintry afternoon, wend your merry way to the historic Olde Malthouse Inn and make yourself at home betwixt its thick stone walls.

Of course, a trip to Tintagel wouldn’t be complete without visiting Tintagel Brewery, an award-winning brewery boasting superb local ales. With a café, bar and shop onsite, as well as a visitor’s centre, you are invited to learn all about the environmentally-friendly ways in which they brew their ales and, best of all, sample delicious tasters.

Long famed to be the birthplace of King Arthur, one of the highlights of your luxury holiday in Tintagel should be a trip to the legendary Tintagel Castle itself. Steeped in folklore and romance, there is an immediately palpable sense of mystery and intrigue as you make your way away around its rambling remains.

Snap a shot of the famous statue of King Arthur and admire the stunning scenery, before making your way along the coast path and down onto the beach below the castle to the gaping Merlin’s Cave, a 330-foot-long sea cave. Accessible at low tide, the cave was once the home of the wizard Merlin, many moons ago.

As well as the castle, Tintagel’s National Trust-owned Old Post Office should definitely be on your bucket list, as should be the 6th Century St Materiana’s Church. Less than 1 mile away from Tintagel, the year-round dog-friendly Trebarwith Strand beach is a great place to let off steam at low tide and inhale the cathartic scents of salty sea air.
