Out & About

Make no bones about it – Rock is a bit posh. Frequented by the likes of Prince Harry and his pals, it’s known as the Saint-Tropez of Britain. And no wonder – it’s a stunning little village on the North Cornish coast, lying on the Camel Estuary and opposite the oh-so-popular Padstow.

Boasting a peach of a beach with fine sand sweeps from Brea Hill to Daymer at low tide, Rock is fab for water sports. There are some lovely eateries and fab watering holes too, along with its own brewery. With truly stunning views and lovely walks, there are lots of reasons to explore this very Cornish gem.

From Barnecutt pasties on a clifftop perch to fish and chips on Rock beach to lovingly crafted meals in your Boutique Retreat, there are opportunities a-plenty for divine eating experiences in Rock. Topped off with a melting pot of restaurants, cafés and pubs in the town, you will never go wanting for a hot meal or tongue-teasing treat.

If you fancy stepping out of your luxury home for an evening of wine and dining, the Mariner’s Rock pub is a must. The lovechild of Rock-based brewer Sharp’s and food hero Paul Ainsworth, it will certainly fill your tum and put a smile on your face. Also on your list should be the Rock Inn; perched above the estuary, this winning restaurant boasts superb views and menus.

Enjoying the beautiful seascapes synonymous with this part of the world, the Blue Tomato Café overlooks the bay and Padstow beyond, challenging you to manage the tricky combination of jaw-dropping views and mouth-watering food. Preparing fresh meals daily from ingredients plucked from the local area, the Dining Room is another for discerning foodies.

Home of the legendary Sharp’s Brewery, no trip to Rock would be complete with a pint or two of a heavenly pilsner or ale. Inspired by landscapes in which the brewery sits, Sharp’s speaks of an inherent connection with Cornwall and explains how the passion of their brewers is measured in every drop of beer.

If you are more of a coffee fan, Fee’s Food is a cute café in Rock and serves up speciality coffees. Give yourself a morning wake up call or afternoon pick-me-up, before wandering over to St Enodoc Hotel Restaurant. Here, you can quaff bubbling glasses of Champers as you watch sailing boats drift along the water.

As well as numerous excellent cafés and bars in Rock, the neighbouring foodie hotspot of Padstow is awash with choices for refreshing tipples. Be sure to keep Rock Oyster Festival on your radar too; a cracking midsummer celebration of food, drink, music and art.

It’s all about the water at Rock. If you’re feeling active, try your hand at one of the many water sports on offer, from water-skiing to diving. If you fancy something a little more sedate, there are lovely boat trips to be had exploring the coastline up towards Polzeath and Port Isaac, including awesome sealife safaris.

Should you prefer terra firma, there are copious stunning walks in and around the area, such as the lovely St John Betjeman Walk which meanders through the sand dunes of the River Camel. Pick up the South West Coast Path and wander in either direction to take in the sights; complete with picnic blankets and a hamper overflowing with goodies, you’ll be in seventh heaven.

If you would like to discover the area surrounding Rock, make sure neighbouring Padstow is on your list (you can get the ferry from Rock to Padstow and back again). As well as the plethora of beaches in the locale, you can join up with the Camel Trail at Wadebridge and go for a spin on two wheels.
