Out & About

Situated on the Rame Peninsula in a sprawling Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, these twinned villages used to lie either side of the border, with Cawsand in Cornwall and Kingsand in Devon. In 1844, Kingsand officially became part of Cornwall and today the two form part of a glorious stretch of coastline. Sheltered by a wooded headland and separated by a small rocky promontory, they reward onlookers with fantastic views towards Plymouth Sound and a dreamy location in which to enjoy a luxury holiday in Cornwall.

Home to two beaches which never get really crowded and narrow, picturesque streets sprinkled with a good selection of shops, cafés, restaurants and multi-coloured cottages, both villages radiate an infectious charm and an olde-worlde feel that’s a bit like stepping back in time. Just the right place to revel in a technological detox, you can enswathe yourself in the luxuries of your Boutique Retreat and lose yourself to the beautiful surroundings (metaphorically, of course). Arrive ready for your holiday and leave feeling fresh, revived and ready to take on the world.

The Halfway House Inn (so-called because it once straddled the Cornwall and Devon border) is great for proper pub grub and a good pint. Take a spot by the crackling fire in the chillier months and in summer take advantage of the sunshine with a seat in the beer garden. If you like your main with a side of stunning views, the Bay Bar and Restaurant is the place to go.

Elsewhere, the Old Bakery in Cawsand serves fantastic food for breakfast, lunch and treats in between, and as the name suggests, specialises in freshly baked bread. If you are feeling particularly adventurous you can even book yourself on a bread making course there. Nearby, Matt Corner's View Restaurant in Millbrook is worth a visit, made even more special by its spectacular views.

Should you fancy staying at your home from home, all our luxury self-catering cottages in Kingsand and Cawsand come fully equipped with everything you could need and more. Pick up some goodies from the local store, pop some Champagne on ice and fully relax in your sumptuous retreat.

Start your day with a reviving brew or freshly ground coffee in one of the local cafés; both the Old Bakery in Cawsand offers somewhere cosy to sit and come around with a steaming hot drink and tasty breakfast.

After a day exploring, there’s no better way to reward yourself than with a glass of something crisp. Pop into the Cross Keys in Cawsand or the Halfway House in Kingsand and browse their extensive offerings. Traditional Cornish pubs, they are as popular amongst locals as visitors and ooze a great atmosphere. The Halfway House Inn lends itself particularly well to cosy winter evenings when a crackling fire pumps out delicious heat.

Fill your holiday in Kingsand and Cawsand with traditional favourites; while winter days are best spent enjoying rejuvenating walks along the South West Coast Path followed by a fireside pint in the local pub, a summer break here beckons for hours by the shore (Kingsand beach is dog-friendly year round) and hearty dollops of ice cream.

Especially popular in summer, there are all sorts of activities you can get involved in. Try out your balancing skills with a few hours SUP-ing around the bay or hop in a kayak and glide across the water. If you don’t have your own equipment, Cawsand Kayak and SUP hire will provide you with everything you could need, including wetsuits, buoyancy aids and more.

Continue your watery adventures with a ferry trip over to Plymouth for a novel way of exploring the city. Or, for a cultural edge, head nearby to Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, Port Eliot House and Estate and Antony House and Gardens. Finally, if you are holidaying in May, make sure the villages’ Black Prince Flower Boat Procession is on your bucket list.
